Monty lights up with curiosity. “We’ve heard a ton of stories about finished cases. I want to hear about one of the unfinished ones.”
Edwin hesitates. “But surely that’s less interesting than a closed case with a clever solution.” Because a neatly tied-up ending and a solved case is always his favourite, especially when Charles is the one to be particularly clever in the solving. But all he gets is a round of good-natured ‘boos’ for his trouble.
Thomas turns a pleading look in Edwin’s direction. “Come on, we all know you’re the bestest, brightest, handsomest ghost detective in the world. Telling us about one case that stumped you isn’t going to change that.”
Under the combined expectant gazes of the group, Edwin relents. He exchanges a speaking glance with Charles; an unvoiced question and answer. There are, in fact, not many options to choose from, but he knows they are in agreement. Edwin stands up from his desk and circles to the caseboard, slipping a card from the very bottom slot.
“It was not exactly a case,” Edwin begins.
“No one brought it to us,” Charles continues. “It just sorta … started.” -

The Cat King scoffs. “Oh fuck no, these woods aren't sacred.” He shudders. “Honestly, I hate them.” But then he fixes her with the curl of a smirk, eyes gleaming with curiosity. “But you, Crystal Palace? You fascinate me.”
Crystal bites her lip, tasting blood, but she doesn't wince. She doesn't flinch. She has done far worse on this eve, and she has a feeling that she'll bargain for far worse if she wants to get out of this in time to escape-
“Can you help me?” She asks, and she's not one to ask for help, but she needs to get out of this town in time. She needs to run, and run far, and never fucking look back.
“Not unless you make a deal with me, sweetheart,” the Cat King says.
(After hitting the end of the line on her relationship with David, Crystal is burying his body in the forest when she finds out that the local legends about the spirit that haunts the forest are real. What she's not expecting, though, is that spirit offering to help her out.)

An extract from the Cryptozoological Society’s quarterly newsletter, issue 588:
I reached out to Edwin Payne earlier this week in the hope that he might be prevailed upon to share some of his great great great grandfather’s personal diaries, so we could perhaps organise some readings. When I eventually succeeded in making contact, he said, “How in god’s name did you get this number? Bugger off and leave me alone, I’m terribly busy.” Assuming this to be nothing more than the famous Payne family sense of humour in action, I naturally called back, but haven’t yet managed to get hold of him again. Nevertheless, I have no doubt that you will all join me in wishing the very best of luck to Edwin and to Charles Rowland, who are currently preparing to mount an expedition to look for evidence of the Lambton Worm early in the new year.

“I’m the Cat Queen of Port Townsend,” the woman says, and it’s somehow both a casual thing and a declaration heavy with magical significance. Thomas can taste it on her words.
"And one of you is very much going to need to face a punishment," she says, but she seems rather bored by the whole endeavor, truly.
And Thomas wants to get her to react. He wants to earn something from her.
Thomas is lonely. He has something itching beneath his skin, carving a hollow out from within him.
Edwin is so stiff and uptight and clearly not onboard with the living. Charles is even more repressed than Edwin, whether he'd like to admit it or not.
And being lonely and empty and amnesiac and itching doesn't exactly improve a person's already tenuous self-control.
And so he blurts, like a reckless idiot with as much self-preservation as a bird landing right in front of a cat: “Why the fuck do you have a table of skeletons growing out of your floor?”
In an instant, the Queen’s gaze snaps to him.
“Y’know what?” the Queen asks, “I’m bored. Things around here get so incredibly mundane. But you? You’re fucking interesting. You’re going to come with me.”
(Role reversal time!)

The Dead Boy Detectives Agency left him on his own in Port Townsend, went back home to London never to come back again, and Thomas made the really poor decision of getting Edwin's sould back, whatever it takes.
It takes a lot, actually. Especially since, y'know, the idiots did came back and are very much a part of the Cat King's life, now. So he's gonna have to deal with the demons, protect Edwin from it, and possibly pay a hefty price to make sure his ghost gets the afterlife he deserves.
He's pretty sure he can take it.---
After a week of being warded off of Port Townsend, Edwin can finally mirror travel back there again. He's not ready for what he is going to see. He is not ready for what he is going to have to do.
MAJOR TW : body horror, implied/referenced torture, death of a loved character (though not permanent, mind you).
