Summary
The Republic hasn't had a standing army in over two thousand years. Even before the Reformation, there was no war on a grand enough scale to justify the expense. It feels like a bad joke, when the Chancellor decrees it, when the Senate allows it. The Jedi aren't a military. The Jedi have never been a military.
They give Obi-Wan a battalion. They give him a battlecruiser, a Marshall Commander, they knight his Padawan. He looks over all the clerical minutiae a military runs on and wishes they'd given him a secretary.

Summary
It's Mirage, of course, who finally asks.
She's just been promoted to Lieutenant, and is taking advantage of the relative peace of the officer's refuge for the first time. They're on their way to provide reinforcements to the 41st, that anticipatory kind of down time no one can sit still through. Mirage is, case in point, sharpening one of her knives.
"Well," Kenobi says, "I suspect it's because I'm trans myself, and Shaak trusts me not to assume I have any right to control how you present yourselves."
Every vod in the room blinks at him.

Summary
"Anyway," Cody adds, "Stop changing the subject and tell me about fucking Vos."
It's not quite the tone of voice he uses to snap orders in a fire fight, but it's close enough Obi-Wan almost answers him automatically. Then the meaning of the words registers, and he scowls instead.
"Vos," Obi-Wan says, "is a loudmouth braggart with no sense of decorum, and his willingness to share sordid details with anyone who asks is not–"
"All due respect, sir," Cody cuts in, somehow twisting the honorific into something that makes Obi-Wan want to drop to his knees, "In just over fourteen hours we're landing in what is going to be an utter osik'la disaster, and you're the only person on board I don't outrank, and I just had to listen to Fox wax secondhand lyrical about how good you are with your mouth when I can't even bite him for it."
Obi-Wan’s gaze drops, unbidden, to the curve of Cody’s mouth. Cody drags his lower lip between his teeth in a move that should not work nearly as well as it does.

Summary
Cody stares at the message for a long moment. He commed Fox because Obi-Wan's unconscious, Wolffe's shit at words, and Rex has his hands full with Tano. He commed Fox because he can say fucking anything to Fox, and he couldn't even collect their dead, and one of these days he is going to snap.
He's got no idea if voicing half the shit chasing itself round his head will help, but his alternative is punching a few more holes in the wall, and he has to work out if Obi-Wan'll feel that before he does it again.

Summary
They didn't actually agree on a time. They never do – Vos knows his shift patterns; Fox knows if he has an assignment, how long it takes him to get to the Guard from the Temple. Vos didn't say he'd come by tonight. It's been sixteen days, since he left, and neither of them are comfortable risking comm transmissions when he's working, and he does, more often than not, spend his first nights back in Fox's bed.
Maybe he realised that. The significance of how much time he's been spending with Fox. Maybe he's decided it's gone far enough.
Fox always wants to send him away. It's fucking stupid, what they're doing. He can nearly hear the lecture Jango would give every time he doesn't kick Vos out, every time he lets Vos curl close. But then Quinlan will make a content noise, or actually relax, or smile just at the corner of his eyes, and Fox's resolve will crumble to nothing.

Summary
Cody frowns. "Yeah, but…" He struggles for the right words. "It was Fox. Just before we started commander training."
"Ah," Obi-Wan says. "Significant, then."
It’s not, as far as Cody knows, something most sapients do. Or any other sapients do, maybe. On Kamino, they can’t have jewellery, or ink, or paint. Always felt like the logical endpoint, the scarring. From his brief exposure to the rest of the galaxy, he’s gathered most people see it as extreme – It is extreme. They don’t have any alternatives.
"It’s a promise," Cody says, after a moment. "To carry him with me."
