He didn’t understand it. But now, Caleb wouldn’t trade it for the world). The blue didn’t really make sense then, but it’s grown to be so familiar to Caleb that it’s like second nature to him now. It belongs. Even though despair and confusion and loneliness shouldn’t stay – even though Dr. Bright says that those feelings are temporary, and that someday, he’ll find balance and be happy – Caleb finds comfort in them. Because they’re tied to Adam.

Summary
The fire licks up and down his arms. It doesn’t hurt nearly as much as he’d have expected it to-- and, though he buries the admission deep down the moment it arises in him, it doesn’t hurt as much as he wants it to. In fact, it doesn’t hurt at all. It feels warm, it tingles a bit, but it’s nothing like the searing heat that had burst out of him when he’d found Caleb.
No, what hurts is the sight of the front door Harkness Tower. The candles burning sadly down to little puddles of wax on the steps, the photos of Caleb that are starting to curl with water damage from the last few days’ rain, the drooping bouquets, the prayers and “gone but not forgotten”s and the way Caleb’s name has been spelled out in candles that have long since melted down.
Or: Adam gets to the tower too late.

Summary
It had been three days and Adam still wasn’t home.
He wasn’t just not home, he was missing. Caleb’s mind struggled to even wrap around the information that someone could simply be there one moment, and then just like that — poof! — be lost.
Of course Caleb knew that people went missing, that it was a thing. He wasn’t an idiot or something. He wasn’t fucking naive. But in his entire life up till now, missing people had been strangers, faces he saw briefly on flyers or milk cartons or on the news. They weren’t supposed to be people he knew.
They weren’t fucking supposed to be Adam.
He’d said something to that effect yesterday, when he’d paid a visit to Adam’s parents. He’d been disturbed by Adam’s mom’s observation that that was probably how every missing person’s family felt; like it wasn’t supposed to have happened to them. It pained Caleb to even think about it, as if his empathy somehow extended to thousands of people he didn’t even know existed, all of their pain magnifying his own.

Part 3: “Adam, I want you to feel comfortable around me all the time, including if you’re high. And I guess I should tell you: that’s how I feel. I always feel comfortable with you.
