After forcing Wickham to take responsibility, Mr. Darcy learns the event has already negatively affected the Bennet sisters' chances at marriage when Jane Bennet's courtship is broken off. He takes it upon himself to marry Elizabeth Bennet who sacrifices herself for her sisters' sake, feeling at fault for Lydia's situation.
