Being forced into an arranged marriage is an eventuality when you're the child of a chief. There's a lot of other baggage it comes with too but we don't talk about that. When it's finally time to get married, no matter when it happens, it feels like it's too soon. One can only hope that the person you're marrying is tolerable and that you'll learn to live with them, just like you've learned to live with all of the other burdens you've taken on in your life. Or so you tell yourself.

Astrid sighed as she finished painting Stormfly’s snout and went to adjust the butterfly-shaped mask she’d coloured around her own eyes. It wasn’t that she wasn’t happy for Hiccup. It was just that she was a Hofferson, and Hoffersons had quite a competitive streak in their nature, stronger than that of most other Berkian families. So by default, she loved winning. She craved the glory that success could bring. The praise. The medals. Call her ruthless, merciless, even, but there was no changing who she was.
When Astrid was done, she glanced over her shoulder to see Hiccup with a bucket of red dye at his side, painting a diamond atop Toothless’s nose. She dug her teeth into her lower lip, an idea forming in her mind. She wasn’t proud of herself for it, but if it meant she would win, just this once, she certainly wanted to see it through.
Of course, it involved a certain son of Stoick the Vast and his not-so-secret secret crush on her…

Summary
Hiccup and his dad didn't fix their relationship post-first movie. Instead, they regularly get into screaming matches around Berk. Hiccup's final straw is brutally atomised when Stoick threatens to ground him and Toothless indefinitely in order to teach Hiccup how to be a 'proper chief and viking'.
Hiccup, whose finally found himself a home in the sky, disrespectfully disagrees and yeets himself out of the berkian's lives.
So I kinda just gave away the whole plot but whatever you can't have everything in life. Please read this is my second fandom post lets goooooooooo. (Hope it's better than the first)

Hiccup has lived on Berk his whole life and is no stranger to the cold that comes with living just a few degrees South of freezing to death. He considers it a feature of his home, actually. The cold that nips at his ears and streaks across his cheeks when he and Toothless fly is not worth worrying about compared to the still bitter chills that fall over the island in winter. At best, it is a small price to pay for the view and the rush. At worst, it is only going to get colder so he might as well appreciate what he’s got.

Once every four years, a collection of six tribes, Berk being included, participate in 'The Heir Games.' This time, the games will be hosted on Berk, and Hiccup, finally being of age to partake in (be legally forced into) the games, has to figure out how on Odin's green earth he is going to survive the five challenges presented, when all of his opponents look like miniature Gods compared to him. He doesn't want anything to do with the games to begin with, but maybe, through a sliver of someone else's bad luck, he can manage to make it past round one. Even with the growing tension between him and one particularly large, very angry and very competitive opponent, he can just about crawl his way to victory.
He's really gonna have wished he just flew away on Toothless.
