Summary
Joe still can’t get himself to look Artie in the eye. He thinks of Norma again. He always fucking thinks of Norma. She’s in his head, his ears, his nose, his eyes. She’s there when he wakes up in the morning, and she’s there when he closes his eyes to sleep at night. She’s there in his dreams, and she’s there in his nightmares. He thinks about her when he sees himself in a mirror because they look the same– sickly and dying. He waits for something to come and save him– something that will never come.

OR, Joe shows up to Wawa in the middle of the night and runs into an old friend of his.

Summary
Early on, not long after they left the mansion, she asked him if he had loved the woman. He told her no. She would not have married him if she did not believe it. There was always a kind of honesty in him, some violent and childlike honesty, but later she became very sad that she had believed him, and in a strange way nearly wished he would have said: but she was kind to me. And: at least understand that she was kind to me. She thinks he takes those parts of himself and puts them away somewhere, never to see them again. She thinks he is disquieted by his weakness.
Norma was a friend of his.

Summary
“I almost had my nose fixed.” Betty says her voice is soft and the tiniest bit vulnerable. “But I always wanted to write anyways and it would have been so expensive.” Betty confesses it casually, but Joe’s head flashes to Norma. Her meticulous skincare routines, her rigorous work out routines, her suffocating rose petal scented makeup, her plastic surgeon on speed dial… “Don’t you ever get it changed.” He blurts out, before he can change his mind. “It’s perfect! You’re perfect!” He blurts out before he can stop himself.

Summary
Send it to the Angels was a short poem she wrote about the time where she and Artie had gone to a local bar close to the beach. There was a blonde boy who looked no younger than twenty five sitting in the back ignoring or rather being completely clueless towards the older woman making advances at him. Batting her eyes, playing with her hair and practically gnawing at his shoulder. And the whole time he just sat staring at the bartender in her black suit and quick hands. Wow!

“‘Do you ever think—‘ Norma takes a swing from her wine bottle, ‘Do you have a lot of negative thoughts about me?’
Joe doesn’t look at her, his head is leaned back on the pillow behind him on her bed. Joe for once has finally allowed himself to turn off his brain for a few hours, and now she's asking important questions again. The stress of living with a star was aging him about 20 years.”

Summary
Sometimes it all gets mixed up and he doesn’t know if he's making Salomé for her or if she’s doing it for him. As if maybe she's throwing him a bone from under the table, like when she buys him a full-sized bottle of Tom Ford he didn't even ask for and now he has to figure out how to make up something like that to her, she who is post-money, post-anything, when the only thing she wants is what she cannot have. Sometimes he grows very afraid she will tell him to leave. Sometimes he thinks maybe there is this terrible monster lurking between them, contorted and grotesque, only kept at bay because neither of them will say its name.

Summary
Her final movie had been made a few years after the Spanish flu, before he had even been born. What had she done since then? The memories slipped away from her, pale and blurry like cirrostratus. All your life I spent waiting for you, she thought, on her knees in that warming garden soil. I sat in this place and waited for you, and neither you nor I knew it. She wanted him to know misery; she wanted him to know even a sliver of what she had felt for twenty-five years. And then she thought about him dying, and felt her blood course hot beneath the full snow moon.
How else is she supposed to keep him here?
