Summary
The ages are truly dark: there are no books around, and if there were any, hardly any would be describing the nature of birds. Fortunately, a keen mind can easily notice details and draw conclusions. Especially when there is ample time for it — all sixteen years of it looming ahead. And so, Maleficent gains a lot of insights — absolutely unsolicited, small, somewhat funny, somewhat serious insights — about birds. More precisely, about ravens. About one of them in particular.

“Oh, don’t be offended, even you must admit you have your moments. Like when you’re supposed to report back to me and come bringing back twigs instead of anything useful!”

She was ready to move on, to allow wandering hands into her precious wings and to other places that ached for an attention that almost felt alien in its lack of familiarity.
She peered at him. Her dear friend who loved her. His lips parted as though to say something, but no words manifested. Instead, he said it all with those black, beautiful eyes, which moved about her face in search of answers.

Maleficent finds it funny, really. Diaval tries to flirt with her and gets just what he deserves: yet another animal now walks on very human legs and bats her very human eyelashes. But suddenly — it seems... it seems like the intolerable royal cat is growing quite fond of a forest bird. At least that's exactly how it looks from the side. Now, that is not funny at all.
