Summary
The ages are truly dark: there are no books around, and if there were any, hardly any would be describing the nature of birds. Fortunately, a keen mind can easily notice details and draw conclusions. Especially when there is ample time for it — all sixteen years of it looming ahead. And so, Maleficent gains a lot of insights — absolutely unsolicited, small, somewhat funny, somewhat serious insights — about birds. More precisely, about ravens. About one of them in particular.

Summary
Maleficent lets out a long-suffering sigh. “It’s been three days, and you’ve been remiss in your duties. Your observations of the little beastie. Have the three bird-brained imbeciles finally burned down their cottage and the creature with it?”
“I beg your pardon.”
“Oh, don’t be offended, even you must admit you have your moments. Like when you’re supposed to report back to me and come bringing back twigs instead of anything useful!”
Or,
The one where Diaval is shiftily building something at the base of Maleficent's tree and she has absolutely no idea what's up with that or why he's decorating it so intently with items that are the colour of her eyes. During nesting season.

Summary
But her old scar itched, attached to wings that were taller than she was. “I don’t like this place,” Maleficent admitted, gesturing to the room. “I used to look at it when I was a child and wonder how they got enough sunlight inside to grow their beds.”
Diaval kicked his human feet out from the tangle of sheets and looked like he might make to get up, but Maleficent realized that he wasn’t wearing a shirt.
And she hadn’t noticed when exactly that’d happened

Summary
One wish — and everything goes backwards. One signature — and the spell hangs above like a black cloud, and the swords are pulled out of their scabbards, and the smell of war hovers in the air again, and the bird saves itself. One deal — and the clock is counting away every hour.

Inconspicuous and neat, it appears on Maleficent’s arm, just above the wrist. This is good, this is very good — legends say these words are a symbol of a soulmate bond. Each one of the pair can read the words first spoken to them by their loved one on their hand.

Summary
She was in severe danger of overthinking things. If she succumbed, her desires would remain ignored for yet another night. That blooming warmth deep within her would remain untouched. She was ready to move on, to allow wandering hands into her precious wings and to other places that ached for an attention that almost felt alien in its lack of familiarity.
She peered at him. Her dear friend who loved her. His lips parted as though to say something, but no words manifested. Instead, he said it all with those black, beautiful eyes, which moved about her face in search of answers.

Summary
‘A single raven was just a raven. A group of ravens was called an unkindness. He had not known true unkindness until becoming a human, however, and even then, he had always known better. Diaval knew Maleficent better than anyone, and he’d thought, however foolishly, that they might have been friends after all they had endured together.’
Some time after Aurora’s wedding, Diaval struggles with his place in the Moors and Maleficent’s life. When the Phoenix Emerald, a precious heirloom of the Dark Fae, is stolen by the mysterious Moon Witch, the raven servant finds himself in a position to recover it - but at a great cost.

Summary
After Aurora's coronation, Maleficent gives Diaval a gift for his years of service and tells him to go find happiness. He leaves. She might've phrased it differently if she'd known he'd take her so literally. Autumn and winter pass, as seasons do, and Maleficent finds herself in possession of a growing number of raven feathers. Meanwhile, Diaval discovers that roaming the countryside as a dragon is not without consequences.

“I’m sorry, you want me to what!?”
Prince Philip’s expression is stuck somewhere between pure shock and sheer horror. He looks a bit like a man who has accidentally inhaled a moth. Or a man who has discovered he’s unknowingly been feasting on human flesh.
Diaval can't really blame him.
... “I want you to teach me how to pleasure a woman.”

Summary
Maleficent finds it funny, really. Diaval tries to flirt with her and gets just what he deserves: yet another animal now walks on very human legs and bats her very human eyelashes. But suddenly — it seems... it seems like the intolerable royal cat is growing quite fond of a forest bird. At least that's exactly how it looks from the side. Now, that is not funny at all.
