Summary
He hears the rustling of canvas and opens his eyes, turning to the door of his tent. Door, Joel scoffs; it's less a door and more a flap held closed by ties. At this particular moment, it's being secured in place by someone who is decidedly not the healer he'd called for.
"Where's the healer?" He grits.
"Busy, it's me or no one."
"Gods above, go get the fool from whatever bar table he's crawled under and tell him he's needed." Shifting Joel pants, his vision fraying black around the edges. Shit, he's lost more blood than he thought. "Git."
The kid doesn't budge. "He's treating the Lord, blisters or some such, he says to make do with me or make do on you're own."
IE: Joel is a fallen knight, fighting for gold instead of honor, and Tess is a squire, hiding from a storied past.

Summary
Putting down the glass, Joel steps in front of her and takes her by her shaking shoulders. "Tess, seriously, what in the Sam hell is goin' on with you?"
She looks up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears, the laughter in her throat cuts off sharply, sounding almost like a sob. "That's a great fucking question, Texas."
"Tess, c'mon." He lays his palm softly against her cheek, and it brings back memories of kissing her right here in this kitchen, on that night three months ago. "It's alright, whatever it is, you know… I'm here for you."
She sighs, licks her lips, and says the one thing he absolutely does not expect her to say, "I'm pregnant."
IE: Tess and Joel meet while going to night school and become friends. On the night of their final class, they cross some lines and end up in bed together. It wasn't supposed to mean anything, but then fate seems to have other plans for them.

Bill raises his rifle, gestures to the east, "Black Creek's that fuckin' way."
The man raises his hands in a placating manner, "I'm mighty hungry, haven't eaten in near on two days." He chuffs nervously, "Don't sound like a long time, does it? Reckon it feels long though."
Exasperated Bill gestures more aggressively, "I'm lettin' you go, so git."
"Now look here, can't we just be civil. First, name's Frank-"
"Well, you listen here, Frank. If'n I feed you, then every other layabout you talk to 'bout it, is gonna come round here lookin' for a free meal, an' I ain't no charity."

"He's wearing leather pants?" Bill tries to angle them so he can catch a peek.
"Mmm hmm, black."
"Christ." Bill shakes his head and guides them back to the center of the floor.
"What did you expect from an 80's cover band?"
Bill huffs, but a smile plays at the corner of his mouth.

'“It’s that bad, huh?” Joel said gruffly, self-consciously running his hand through his hair, his eyes fixed on the curls on Benji’s head. “I…” he cleared his throat and looked at Tommy for help.
“Tess cuts our hair,” Tommy blurted out, pushing a glass of whiskey into Joel’s hand as he came around the couch.
Maria blinked at them for a moment, thinking back to literally three days prior when she’d given Tommy a trim. And the dozen or so times before that.
“Used to,” Tommy clarified, sitting down. “She always cut our hair. It’s… her job.”
Joel took a swig of his drink and sighed, not quite able to look at Maria or Ellie yet.
“I’m so sorry, Joel,” Maria said quietly.'

“Woah.” Ellie’s face is inches away from her window when Tess looks back, her gaze fixed on the deer. “They’re so big.”
“There’s a whole lot of things bigger than them,” Tess snorts.
“The only animals I’ve seen are birds and dogs.”
Right.
Joel rolls down his window and she’s hit with a blast of cold air to the face. She’s thankful, actually, as the roar of the wind fills the car, drowning out any of the kid’s attempts at further conversations. He rolls it back up once the sun has started to set, the insects beginning their evening songs.

Summary
Tommy’s never been quiet about where he stands. He thinks that their best bet is to try to find a settlement, to walk in careful and earn a place and pray it isn’t filled with cultists. He knows that he and Joel can get on the way they’ve been living just fine – they’re used to scraping by. But Ellie...the kid needs more. She needs space to grow, to feel safe. She needs a home. Tommy clings to the idea that there are still good people left in this world – he has to believe that, or else what’s the point in continuing on?
But Joel wants no part of what he clearly thinks is Tommy’s delusion. He scoffs, calls him naive. He insists they’ll manage, because they’ve always managed. The idea of trusting strangers, of putting Ellie inside anyone else’s walls, under anyone else’s rules, it rubs Joel raw. He doesn’t say it out loud, but Tommy hears it anyway: no one can protect her like I do. And maybe that’s true. But maybe that’s not the point anymore.
