“I’m sorry, I think you’ve got the wrong number,” the woman cut her off.
Vi felt her face go so hot she was sure that it was visibly steaming in the winter air. Of course it was a fucking wrong number - just the cherry on top of an already shit morning. She struggled to conjure up some sort of apology. Instead, what came out was, “Oh. Well, thank god, because I was feeling really bad about yelling at someone who sounds so sexy.”
As soon as the words left her mouth she wished she had a spare hand to cram them back inside. She was considering just abruptly hanging up when a breathy chuckle filtered across the line.
“Awfully bold for someone who’s ranting about cement to a stranger at eight o’clock in the morning.”

Fingers pause, the faintest dusting of pink colours her cheeks and her lips purse. If it’s possible his heart grows another two sizes in his chest. Then Caitlyn clears her throat, fingers picking at the fabric again.
“Bet you say that to all the girls”.
He scoffs. “Have you met me in the presence of pretty girls?”
“Several and, now that you mention it, I do recall you being barely able to get your name out let alone a compliment. Suppose it’s why you thought it was a good idea to go and get it tattooed on your face”.

It dawns on Caitlyn then that this kind of closeness feels different because it has never lasted this long. It was usually a means to an end, the natural prelude to an incoming hug, or destined to end in a kiss, but never meant to be prolonged without further action. Perhaps it is that novel intimacy that is the culprit behind the rush of heat in Caitlyn’s cheeks, but if Vi notices, she gives no sign.

For Caitlyn, however, holidays mean spending time with her parents whom she truly adores but her mother’s expectations are never low. Caitlyn is always a fighter and a very bad loser at that. As Caitlyn grows older, her mother’s expectations shift into ever more unattainable goals and it eventually became the dreadful, “When will wee finally meet a boyfriend?” That is one expectation Caitlyn simply can’t meet. In fact, she hasn’t been able to meet her mother’s expectations for a very long time. Caitlyn is living a lie that has begun to spiral out of control.
Then she meets Vi – Violet. The butch-Christmas-Elf at the mall. With her and Caitlyns infatuation, the lies are in danger of being exposed.
