His body begged him to rest, to slow down, and allow others to take care of his mess for once, but Ed had never been the best at looking after himself. It took a little bit more than a day for him to finally listen – he visited Al with the explicit goal of falling asleep next to his brother, his bed big enough for the two of them just this once.
Unaware of how dangerous his injuries from the Promised Day are, Ed waits too long to go see a doctor. In the end a few hours can make the difference between life and death.

If his heart beat any faster, he would lose it, the organ breaking through his ribcage and crawling away until it rested at the foot of Al’s bed.
“Early onset of sepsis has a mortality rate of 40%. Since you have only one kidney and a still healing liver… let’s say 50%. If our aggressive early treatment doesn’t work, and you develop septic shock? A mortality rate of 80 to 90% considering the state your body is in.”
“Oh.”

Edward gets kidnapped only minutes before Riza's promotion ceremony is set to begin - which is probably why nobody notices the former alchemist missing.

His hand is still over Ed’s mouth. He feels the boy’s warm breath against his fingers. Slowly, bringing a finger to his lips, he removes his hand. Ed sucks in a breath, but, even concussed, he has the sense to keep quiet.
At the very least, Hawkeye must know what’s going on now. The explosion would have drawn her back…if he only weren’t pinned by the rubble.
He hates to be a sitting duck.

Summary
Every state alchemist must get rectified each year. They can present their research. Give a demonstration. Or participate in mock combat. Whatever they choose, they have to show up on time and ready to wow, or else they get stripped of their title.
Mustang thought Ed knew about this. He thought Ed would take this seriously and show up on time for once in his life. But, as he sits in a room with an asshole major general to his left and a ticking clock in front of him, he starts to wonder just how seriously Ed takes this whole military thing.
Has Ed disappeared just to piss him off? Or is there something else at play?
