A lot, apparently.
Enter an evil author who starts pulling strings and wrecking Gar’s perfect night by introducing bad guys who have no business being in this universe. Or in any universe, really.
All for a Christmas present.
Written for Secret Santa 2024 for Lav, who requested something with “Rachel riding on Gar’s back” and got this instead.

Gar chuckles, a dry, broken sound that almost hurts Jason’s heart. If he actually cared.
“You and no one else.”
Jason frowns. He’s seen it before: Gar taking care of everyone else. Gar trying to keep this fucked up family together with all his being. Gar being brushed aside when he has his own problems. The Titans can be called a lot, but heroes isn’t a term Jason would use. They’re all selfish, out for their own gain and glory, worried only about their own problems. Jason’s no saint himself, but Gar is. He’s the only one Jason would really think of as a hero. He puts everyone above himself, never complains, and never gives up on anyone. Even Jason.
Has anyone ever bothered to ask Gar if he’s alright?
Or,
Jason and Gar find solace in each other, because dammit, someone needs to let these guys grieve. Also, Gar would be the perfect friend for Jason.

“Do you ever just feel like disappearing? Being away from all this… chaos?”
Kory tilted her head as she allowed his words to linger in her mind. Of course she could relate, all she wanted on Tamaran was to be away and free. This planet was her escape.
“Sometimes even the pressure of being a hero can become too much, but it’s what we do. We help people no matter the circumstance, no matter the weight of the burdens that we may carry. Never forget that.” He glanced at her as his body tensed up.
He then let out a frustrated sigh, “Even if we feel like we’re losing our mind? Seeing things that aren’t even there… or haven’t happened yet?”
Kory’s concern grew as she wondered what had transpired inside of the lab, “Gar, what’s going on?”
He pushed himself off the railing, taking a step back as he thought of a way to explain it where it would make sense.
Kory stood up straight, folding her arms as she watched him run a hand through his hair. He started to pace back and forth. His nail to his teeth as he thought of everything that had happened to him since they reached Metropolis.
Kory and Gar talk about their visions.

A cage is wheeled into the circle, a spotlight following its path. Logan feels a bundle of nerves tighten in his stomach.
Logan squints. There’s a flicker of yellow among the dark mass.
And then there’s a flash, and the smell of sulfur.
The Nightcrawler lands atop its cage, head swiveling wildly. Logan’s stomach drops.

The door to sickbay looms up ahead and he falls into the now open doorway, glancing up through a blur of exhaustion.
The captain looks back at him, dirt and blood staining her body. Despite himself, Harry cracks a smile.
