He’s running out of air. His lungs are burning as he kicks his legs and claws at the water desperately, swimming deeper and deeper.
Is this how he dies? At the bottom of a lake, suspected of murder, disliked by most? He wouldn’t be surprised, he probably doesn’t deserve any better.
Why did he jump in after Robin in the first place? He’d leaped off the metaphorical bridge, so to speak, and dived in headfirst after his friends -
Except, they’re not really his friends, are they? They’re all just kind of... stuck together.
He’s about to give up, to turn and swim back up to the boat, because really - it’s the sensible thing to do. Maybe there’s still time to find a car and fucking book it to Mexico. He can start a new life with a new name, and (as a bonus) he’s heard the drug business is really good over there.
But there’s a niggling thought at the back of his mind that makes him keep going - the same voice that urged him to jump into the water in the first place.

“You’re high , Munson?” Steve asked, reaching up to take Eddie’s chin in his hand, bringing him closer under the pretense of looking into his eyes. Now that he really looked, they were edged in red - bloodshot with more than just sleeplessness.
“Always,” Eddie breathed. They were so close now, foreheads practically touching and Steve couldn’t stop smiling, “Are you… flirting with me, Harrington?”
Steve laughed again, quieter now so as not to spook him, “Definitely, yes. Was I not being obvious enough?”

Steve kept glancing at Eddie Munson, who was carelessly eating a bag of chips, crumbs pooling at the creases in his ‘HellFire’ shirt. He felt his hands become clammy and sweat drip down his hair. If Eddie had read the letters, which Steve knew Eddie did, how come ‘Freak’ Munson was so calm about it? Was he just acting normal for the sake of Steve Harrington? Why wasn’t Eddie freaking out as much as Steve was?!
“Spit it out, Harrington.” Eddie’s voice boomed in the small space between them, surprising Steve so much that he nearly jumped out of his skin. “You’re creeping me out with all of your staring.”
“I’m creeping you out?” He let out a breathy chuckle, pointing his index finger between them. “I’m not the one acting so calm right now!”
“Why? What’s happening now?” Eddie turned to face Steve, his mischievous mannerisms instantly dropping. His eyes were full of fear, and Steve could see his hands shaking. Vecna seriously fucked up Eddie Munson. He fucked up everyone.
