What matters is that the soft couches and chairs muffle the clink of ceramic and the incessant chatter, preventing the atmosphere from overwhelming her. The lights are dim, Harrow can get a steamed milk, and she and her study partner can spread their eight hundred textbooks out over the corner booth and make serious progress on their project for ARCH 309, Archaeological Science.
After a K-12 career plagued by Gideon Nav’s absurd and insulting chivalry, Harrowhark Nonagesimus goes to college, looking forward to a future forever free of redheaded menaces. She’s got a freshly declared major, a study partner almost as smart as she is, and a new favorite coffee shop that offers menu items she can actually consume.
Her optimism lasts until Palamedes Sextus holds their group project hostage, forcing her to attend a rugby game as his moral support. There, on the pitch, muddy and bloody and beaming, Gideon Nav scores a try. And then-- to compound the indignity-- Palamedes drags her to the drink-up afterward.
For the first time in her life, Harrow finds herself enmeshed in a friend group-- and even worse, that friend group includes Gideon Nav.

Home ec taught Gideon another vital life rule, just minutes later: life isn’t fair.

(Weiss probably knew all about how Ruby had stopped attending high school, desperately transferring to self-study after the god awful experience that was her freshman year—just like how Ruby knows how Weiss got that scar on her face.)
It was a special type of intimacy, Ruby thinks, to know someone's deepest secrets but not their favorite color.

Summary

Summary
A light flush spreads across the firefighter’s cheeks. It’s almost like she’s embarrassed by the memory, and Annie might’ve found it endearing if it weren’t for the fact that her breathing was beginning to fail. Anticipation and apprehension rises up her spine while the other woman finds her words.
“A woman yelled at me from her window on the day I took my tour. It was...a horrifying experience, and I decided not to return to it,” she explains almost sheepishly, shrugging one shoulder and glancing away just in time to miss the way Annie’s face transforms entirely.
In all of one moment, everything is startlingly clear. Annie can see this woman in her mind’s eye, standing below her window in a red scarf. She can see Ymir screeching and her running away and Annie missing her by mere moments. It’s a perfect play by play that she’s been repeating in her head for weeks, except now she actually has a face to imagine. And that face has her stomach dropping all too suddenly, has all the blood draining from her head, has her squeezing the cat in her arms tight enough for him to let out a mrow of alarm.
Oh fuck.

“Oh, yeah.” Callum chuckles a little and tosses the die in his hand. “It’s funny. I thought this was bigger.”
“We were smaller then.”
Callum snorts. “I suppose. But I swear there was a bigger one too. The runes glowed. It was supposed to be a key or something?”
“Oh?” says Claudia. The air shifts. “Weird. Where would it be?”
There’s a pause. Suddenly Callum can’t even hear the waves anymore, and it’s just him and Claudia and a threat in her smile.
“Where’s the cube, Callum?”

Summary
She tried forcing herself to remember sometimes.
It never went very well, her head always reduced to a series of harsh aches, making Ruby feel like someone had taken a hammer to the inside of her brain—mashing and mashing until all that was left was a weird runny stew. It never failed to leave her exhausted, and even though every time she tried she made sure she was alone Snow always seemed to stumble upon her with an unreadable expression on her face.
(Though maybe that was just because Ruby couldn’t remember the expression on her face. Semantics)
Or;
“I’m fine.” She said finally. “Don’t... Don’t worry.”
It almost felt like the wrong thing to say, like it was too comfortable and too familiar for where she was—who she was with. It almost felt like Ruby was toeing the line of a boundary she couldn’t see, and she was afraid that when she could finally know what it was it would be because she’d crashed into it so violently that she’d been sent sprawling to the ground.
