At the steps of the casino a little boy dressed in brightly patched overalls shoves a crumpled paper into Wolfwood’s hand, then bounces on his toes until Wolfwood smoothes it out. It’s a flyer, hand painted with a large cage holding a question mark. It beckons Wolfwood come see the caged wonder in the big top all week! He looks at the boy who is grinning at him. He’s missing his two front teeth, shaggy hair, ribs protruding and skinny arms.
“I ain’t given’ you money for a piece of paper, kid,” Wolfwood says. He does reach into an inner pocket of his coat and extracts two pieces of candy. “Here.”

Two and a half years after an alternate universe July is destroyed, Wolfwood escorts Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson through the desert to caravan port. They're doing investigative reporting on human trafficking in caravan's after Meryl's success in publishing a piece on Vash the Stampede post July. Wolfwood is trying to live and forgive himself for his betrayal that ultimately killed Vash.

A few days after Mundus's first invasion of the human world, the twins get a call from the soldiers they made friends with during the aftermath. An enemy devil has been captured and the army would like some information, except the devil in question doesn't speak English and wants very much to kill them all... would the twins come help out?
Normally, Vergil would let the humans struggle, but he senses an opportunity to give Dante a lesson on how to act like a devil... and possibly prevent his twin from experiencing the same learning pains as he did. Problems arise almost immediately and the question of what the future holds for the denizens of two worlds is asked, and the beginnings of an answer are found.

Things were going well. The peaceful protest at Hart Plaza was able to stay fairly peaceful, and when the newly deviated RK800 brought reinforcements from CyberLife, the movement was able to fight another day. They had one foot in the door of actually discussing change for androids.
Or… they were supposed to. Markus was supposed to make a speech to the androids outside of the recycling centre safely. Connor was supposed to be a deviant.
Some things don't happen like they’re supposed to, apparently.

When Hank says that Connor can't keep sleeping on his couch forever, he realizes his time is up. It happened sooner than Connor expected, but he should have known that he'd overstayed his welcome. He had to leave, even if it was the only place that had ever felt like home.

Summary
Whumptober Day 24 - Neglect
There were signs Hank was trained to look for as a lieutenant, to spot victims of abuse so he could better handle emotionally intense situations. Many of those signs on his mental list lined up a little too closely with the way Connor acted sometimes. Like a kid neglected until they stopped bothering to seek help. The implication made something twist inside Hank.
He should have been able to recognize the signs of what was going on sooner, before he'd had a one-sided yelling match with Connor. Now he had to fix what he messed up.
