Summary
It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank. Where Vash, alone at the end of his road, is haunted by four spirits. (Well, one spirit. Four of one spirit. Though they're not really the same, it's more like--okay it's Wolfwood. Wolfwoods. Wolveswood. There's four of them.) Will Vash heed their (his? their?) message?

Summary
The priest, however, is sitting cross legged, hooked up to an IV, a book open in his lap. He’s dressed in a black v-neck sweater and loose pants, rather than the all-black ensemble Meryl had found him in. There’s a bandage on his cheek, and his sunglasses are folded on the table beside him. As Meryl steps closer, he lifts his gaze, apparently hearing her approach. When their eyes meet, Meryl is expecting an intense look—he carries such a massive gun, and had been in such a state when she found him—but instead, she’s… surprised.
His eyes are brown, and soft. His eyelashes are really long, too. He looks… gentle, more than anything. Meryl supposes it’s a fitting look for a priest, but she has to avert her gaze before she stares for too long.
“Hi,” Meryl says, then clears her throat. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you. I was one of the people who found you before, and I just wanted to see how you were doing.”
“Right,” the priest says. “I remember. This’ll be the second time you saved my life, ain’t it?”
---
Meryl properly introduces herself to Wolfwood during their time on the colony ship.

Summary
Wolfwood whistles sympathetically at the sight of her as he props Punisher against the wall. The bed dips when he sits, tilting her towards him. Even though he doesn’t touch her yet, she can already feel the heat radiating from him against her back.
“Spikey had to do his Plant thing, said he was sorry, he’ll try to be back in a few hours. I know I’m not the deluxe heater he is, but thought I could help.”

Meryl's on her period, and Wolfwood offers his services as a heating pad <3 background polygun referenced throughout.
Chapter 1 is rated T, non-sexual intimacy, no blood, just cozy heating-pad snuggle time, self-contained
Chapter 2 is rated M, sexual intimacy, period sex (fingering), still sweet and soft and cozy, directly follows chapter 1 [overall rating increases accordingly to reflect this] -

Wolfwood pushes Angelina to the limit trying to beat the storm dovetailing them since morning. His grip is tight as he holds her steady against gusts that try to swat them off the road. Vash has been quiet in the side car, tucked low and coat collar high against the wind licking up dust devils in their wake, staring hard at some point on the horizon too far for Wolfwood to see.

Summary
They're lying in bed, naked , of course, given that they'd come back to their room and fallen upon each other in a frenzy immediately after eating dinner. Vash's cheek is pillowed on Wolfwood's chest, prosthetic arm slung across his body as Wolfwood smokes. Their bodies are fresh with cooling sweat, and Wolfwood lets his fingers play along the dips and ridges of scar tissue along Vash's back. He wonders, not for the first time, how Vash had managed to reach some of these, whether he'd had help, someone bandaging his wounds long before Wolfwood was even a glimmer in his Mama's eye. He runs his fingertips over a long, jagged line of scar tissue.
"Do you even remember how you got all these?" he says, voice coming out rough from the smoke. He feels Vash tense underneath him and not for the first time curses his stupid mouth.
Vash relaxes again after a second, tilting his head on Wolfwood's chest. "Mm," he says, a low hum into Wolfwood's skin, "Most of them? I remember that one, at least."
Wolfwood presses his fingers against the jagged, hard line of tissue. "Yeah?"

Summary
"You're not sleeping," Wolfwood says. gesturing to the deep bags under Vash's eyes, "I'm sure as shit you're not eating anything but booze. What are you tryna do, spikey, kill yourself?"
Vash swallows again, and to Wolfwood's horror, he can see wetness budding in the corner of Vash's eyes. "Maybe?" Vash says, hesitantly, and then before Wolfwood can respond he keeps going, "Not really, but just, y'know," he makes a wobbly gesture with his hand. "I thought maybe —" Vash hesitates, "I thought maybe you wouldn't want to guide me anymore. After, well, what happened in Dragon's Nest."
Wolfwood coughs on a drag of his cigarette, "S'nothing I didn't already know," he says, gruffly.
Vash looks at him, sorrow in his eyes, "There's a difference between knowing and whatever that was."

Summary
Despite Vash’s babbling, Wolfwood says nothing. He smears bruise cream over Vash’s cheek with a tenderness that is probably unearned, then draws back for the ice pack he previously wrapped in a clean towelette. When he holds it out, Vash bites down on his tongue so he won’t reject the offer out of hand. He accepts the pack with his prosthetic hand.
“...I really hate to keep making trouble for you, Wolfwood.”
“The trouble isn’t why I’m angry,” Wolfwood grunts. He clasps his hands between his knees, now, lacking anything to do with them, and averts his gaze. “There’s always gonna be trouble. You’re such a damn bleeding heart. I know what I signed up for.” His eyes return to Vash, slightly wet along the waterline, a visible crease in his brow, lips downturned at the edges. “You take yourself too damn lightly, Needle-Noggin. I can’t stand it.”
It—
Isn’t the first time Vash has heard a sentiment like that.

While dressing Vash's wounds, Wolfwood reminds him of something somebody important told him once.

Summary
“Never knew you to be a prude, Tongari.”
“I’m not,” Vash grumbles. He’s on his third glass himself, but Wolfwood worked through that bottle single handedly, which is already out of character. A second is downright unheard of. “I’m just…”
He trails off. He knows what he wants to ask, but it’s rare for him to put anything out in the open like this, particularly with Wolfwood. The words feel awkward and misshapen in his mouth, and he’s not keen on spitting them out. Wolfwood pours himself another glass and has downed half of it by the time Vash finds it in himself to speak, rolling one shoulder out.
“Just, are you… doing okay?”
“Mm?” Wolfwood grins. “Worryin’ about me? You know you got limited real estate in that noggin as-is, right? Better not waste it.”
Vash seriously considers clocking Wolfwood, and not in the metaphorical sense. “‘Scuse me for caring, then, Christ.”

Wolfwood indulges a bit more than Vash is used to.

Summary
Maybe Wolfwood is just seeing what he wants to see. He doubts Vash’s mindset on the matter is that complex; he’s kind of a simple guy. But Wolfwood misses seeing him smile nonetheless, and he misses even more the sound of Vash’s genuine laugh, or the huffy squawks he’d let out whenever Wolfwood bothered him, or—well, everything about Vash, when he’s not so weighted down with stress that he can barely meet Wolfwood’s eyes. These might be the last weeks they spend together, and Wolfwood doesn’t believe he’s going to make it much further after that, much less far enough to see Vash again, once his brother is through with him.
So… in that regard…
“Tongari,” Wolfwood says, and kicks him under the table. Vash’s eyes, amber-tinted in the dim bar lighting, glide in Wolfwood’s direction. “Dance with me.”
---
Approaching the end of their journey together, Wolfwood asks Vash to indulge him one last time.

Summary
“Wolfwood,” Vash whispers. He shakes his head without taking his gaze off of Andy, who’s dropped his head. “It’s fine.”
Wolfwood shuts his mouth, though he doesn’t look happy about it. Vash isn’t sure he could ask for that anyway. When Vash rises to his feet, Andy lifts his face again, tears streaming off his cheeks. He’s grimacing, bared lips and clenched teeth, and for all the fury in his expression, it’s obvious what he’s feeling first and foremost is the pain.
Even if it wasn’t obvious, Vash knows exactly how he feels—has suffered through the same emotion every day for the past one hundred and fifty years, so he’d be able to identify it regardless.
“You killed my mom,” Andy whispers.
---
Vash and Wolfwood get involved in a feud that has nothing to do with them, as they always do. Lives are saved, but not all of them, and a child ends up orphaned, leaving Vash grappling with both his guilt and the remembered grief of when it happened to him.

Summary
It isn’t even sandy enough in here to cushion his fall. Vash manages to fall without making a sound, but Wolfwood still shifts onto his back, turning his head to squint at Vash with bleary, suspicious dark eyes.
“The hell’re you going?”
“Nowhere,” Vash gripes. “I just wanted to see if I could—it’s stupid. Go back to sleep, Wolfwood.”
Because he can never stand not to give Vash a headache, Wolfwood ignores the request and rolls over onto the side facing Vash, says, “Not if you’re gonna use my eyes bein’ closed to do stupid shit. Sit your ass down.”
“I’m not doing anything stupid,” Vash complains. He nonetheless drags himself back over, settling back down at Wolfwood’s side (or more or less in that area, he leaves more distance between them now with Wolfwood facing him) and bending his knees into his chest.

Vash and Wolfwood are in the cave for almost a full day before Brad finds them.

Summary
“Woah!” Wolfwood’s hands fly, perhaps instinctively, to catch the kid’s back. (Antonio, Vash recognises; Tony for short. Vash was there when his mother was pregnant, but hadn’t been able to make it for the birth. He’s growing pretty well.) “Hey, bud, what’s—”
Tony is upset beyond the point of coherent speech, already crying as he fists his hands in the collar of Wolfwood’s sweater. Wolfwood looks openly aghast, lowering down into a crouch to set him on his feet as he listens to Tony babble, and Vash’s eyes drop to his hands. They’ve adjusted now that Tony’s on the ground, hovering his back rather than holding it, and they tremble slightly, his fingers twitching like he’d like to place them back down.
He doesn’t, though.

Vash notices that Wolfwood is great with kids, but always keeps his hands as far away from them as possible.

Summary
Not that Vash would necessarily categorise this as his mistake—at least, not out loud. He had been far enough away from the skirmish that he hadn’t been able to intervene, had only seen what was happening from several yards out of reach. For the most part, the dead man himself had been to blame. His companions were losing, so in a fit of desperation, he grabbed onto the closest, weakest hostage he could find—a child. Vash had frozen where he was engaged with another bandit, but before he could get any closer, the man’s finger twitched on the trigger, and someone else acted.
Wolfwood is thorough. Vash has that as consolation, at least; the man had been dead in seconds. After, when Vash’s tears ran more or less dry, he approached Wolfwood—not even really with the intention of chastising him, but Wolfwood only snapped at him and ducked his head before turning to leave. It’s always hard to tell with those sunglasses on, but Vash is pretty sure Wolfwood didn’t even meet his eyes before he took off. It stings a little, though it shouldn’t. Vash knows what Wolfwood probably expected him to say.

A quick escalation during a fight leads to a man dead. Vash and Wolfwood both grapple with it.

"But that's stupid," he says stubbornly. Vash lets out a groan and plonks his head against the table. "So she's half fish, who gi's a shit? She saved the stupid bastard from drownin', he shouldn't care 'bout a few scales -"
"That's the point. She cares, so she thinks she 'as to change to make 'im happy." Vash's voice is muffled as he speaks into the solid wood. He shifts until his head rests on his surprisingly pointy chin. "'S really sweet what you're sayin', though. You really wouldn't care if you fell in love with a fish?"
"Thought she said she was half fish?"
"Mermaid, technically. But you wouldn't mind?"
In which the boys get drunk, Vash projects onto an old Earth fairytale, and Wolfwood gets a crash course in Plant biology.

Summary
He’s expecting to go at this uninterrupted for the next hour or so at least, without any windows overlooking the backyard from either the nursery or the bedrooms shared by the older kids, but he hears boots treading on sand from behind him before even half an hour has passed. The shifting of the grains is so quiet it’s near imperceptible, but there’s no tricking Livio’s ear. His vision swims a moment as Razlo is alerted, but Razlo quickly returns to what he’d been doing before (fussing over the weeds) as they both reason out who exactly is moving behind him.
Though Razlo has never liked Vash, he doesn’t see him as a threat, either. It’s the opposite if anything; Vash staunchly refuses to fight no matter how often Razlo begs him for a duel. It’s probably… fair, actually, even if Livio himself is a little bit bummed about it. Vash doesn’t have a whole lot of “fighting” left in him, if Livio understands correctly… and also, Razlo’s idea of a friendly spar is a little bloodier than most people’s, Livio has learned.
“Mornin’,” Livio calls, because Vash hasn’t spoken yet.
---
The morning after Christmas, Vash catches Livio on his way back out of December.
