“You–You murdered him!” the figure from the window gasped.
“I didn’t,” the other figure murmured, shock still dampening his voice, “Did you?”
“O–Of course not!” She raised a knife, which caught a golden glint from the sparse light of the window. “I was protecting him!”
Cautiously, as to not scare her, the other figure approached the dead man on the desk and gently held two gloved fingers to his neck. Still warm, but definitely no heartbeat. He carefully eased the body’s head to the side. He cursed under his breath.
Donovan Desmond was dead.

For future events, we should be able to maintain this status quo and easily pass as a married couple. The question is if Yor will be able to continue this level of intimacy, but based on her reaction tonight, it didn’t seem too difficult for her.
“Loid?” Yor called.
He turned around to find she was right in front of him. “Yes?”
Of course, Yor has always been slightly unpredictable. I’ll have to—
Before he could react, she pulled on his shoulder, stood up on her toes, and gave him a peck on the cheek.
“Thanks for everything,” she said sweetly.
And then she left, humming happily as she slipped into her room. Twilight stood firmly planted in the middle of the hallway.
…I’ll have to…have to…
…
…
Twilight is a man of considerable intelligence. Until he isn't.

“I know, but you’re still the best agent we ever had. You’re the only one I trust to keep her safe.”
“I’m an unemployed bachelor living alone out in the middle of nowhere. That’s hardly a good environment for a kid.”
“It won’t be that long, just a few months at most. You don’t need to raise her, for crying out loud, just make sure she stays alive and well. We’ll compensate you and everything,” the Handler says.
“What if I say no?”
A futile question.
“Ultimately, I can’t force you to do anything anymore,” she says, “But the poor kid has been through so much. I’m asking you as a friend to protect this little girl.”
She sucks in a breath and holds it, as if debating to say what’s on her mind.
“You fought so children could have a safe world to grow up in, right?” Her voice is gentle and sincere. “Please, Twilight, she needs that world more than ever.”

Anya stands at the end of the hall, just in front of Twilight’s door.
She smiles at him, chimera plush dangling from her small hand.
If Twilight didn’t know better, he’d think she was trying to hide something.
But he does know better.
And he’s terrified.
He’s standing in front of Anya’s room, hand still on the doorknob, having just put her to bed mere moments ago. Anya is not standing at the end of the hall, she’s asleep on the other side of the door.
And yet, here she is, smiling at him.
He freezes at the sight of the second Anya.
She only grins back.
Or…
Twilight begins seeing things and his world fall apart.

The lady in Papa's mind was very pretty. Prettier than the princess in the book. Her hair was long and shiny, with a fancy gold clip in it, and she wore a black dress and tall boots. Her skin was pale and kind of glowy like a ghost, but her eyes were deep red like cranberries.
Even though the lady was happy in his memories, Papa was not happy. The gloomy clouds in his mind grew heavier each time he thought about her.
Anya just wanted Papa to be happy for real. She thought that the bit of happiness he’d felt when he’d first brought Anya home would keep growing and growing, but it had gotten stuck like a little plant trying to grow in a sidewalk crack. How could she get it unstuck?

She hates this. Hates feeling so small, so powerless, so wrong.
It reminds her of that lab. The way his eyes linger on the numbers, calculating, analyzing, assessing. The way their eyes used to search for anomalies, or mistakes, or anything wrong so that she would have to study again and avoid participating in any childish acts.
She grips the hem of her uniform tighter. It’s the same suffocating feeling she had back then when scientists murmured in clipped voices, reviewing results as if she wasn’t even there. As if she were just an experiment.
Her heart hammers against her ribs. She isn’t supposed to remember that. Isn’t supposed to compare this to the past. Because this is different, isn’t it?

“There’s no getting out of this, Twilight,” Yuri smirked. “We found the real Porter Ensley locked in a closet unconscious. We know who you really are.” He gestured for one of his men to unmask him. As they stepped forward, Twilight’s eyes widened with desperation and he started struggling against his restraints. Yuri felt a sense of glee shoot through him as he gestured for another two of his men to hold him down.
What he saw made him do a double take.
With the disguise off, Twilight slumped, the fight leaving him, and those who were holding him back returned to their spots. Twilight kept his head down, eyes boring holes into the table, hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.
Even with his face bent towards the table and eyes averted, the man’s blonde hair and sharp features were unmistakable.
Twilight was Loid Forger.Or: Six years after the beginning of the series, Yuri finally catches Twilight. He decides to finally get his well deserved revenge for everything the man took from him.
