David pauses with his ring finger midway through dabbing serum under his eye. “I’m sorry?”
Patrick folds his arms, a close second choice for those occasions where he doesn’t have pockets to bury his hands in. “What if I got a piercing?” The same question, but a little less sure of itself.

Summary
David is quitting.
He’s had enough of working for a photography company with an off-the-books philosophy of "sleaze and cheese", he's had enough of getting forced into assignments at the last minute when the company president decides he's flitting off to party with D-list celebrities instead. He’s quitting. This is, in fact, his last job.
At least it's an easy shoot - a puff piece on some up-and-coming Canadian singer-songwriter on the indie circuit who's just been catapaulted to widespread fame. No complications, no controversy. He'll be in his apartment and wallowing in his bamboo-silk sheets before he knows it.

He’s tall—taller, anyway—with perfectly swept dark hair, wearing a short sleeved button up with some monochromatic abstract pattern. It stands out in direct contrast to the rich color of the tattoos etched from his biceps to his wrists. Swaths of orange and pink and blue florals. He’s so struck by the color, the contrast, the face, that he can’t really pick out the details in the designs at first.
“So what am I working with?” David says with a casual wave of his hand.

He should be excited for a whole month at home — holy fuck, this townhouse is his home — without his boyfriend.
And he is. Kind of. He can sprawl out in bed without Patrick's limbs kicking him back, he can eat pizza several nights a week without Patrick's teasing, he can nap in the afternoon without Patrick's twanging guitar, and, most importantly, he can shower — and face mask and undereye patch and pedicure himself — to his heart's content without Patrick banging on the bathroom door saying he needs to pee, as if his place doesn’t have two other bathrooms.
But the truth is, Patrick isn't here to do those things right now, and David can't deal with that. It makes him… itchy, or something. Like skin healing over from a scrape or like half his heart is in goddamn Tampa, the one fucking place he really, really doesn't want to follow, and he misses him so much.
