Summary
Not satisfied by his conquest of Gusu, Wen Ruohan dreams up a new way to increase his power over the cultivation world. He organizes a contest of martial skill and demands that each sect send a champion to compete for the grand prize: the hand in marriage of Lan Xichen, omega firstborn of the fallen Lan sect leader, and current captive in Nightless City.
Displeased at being ordered around, the sects comply in name only, sending their weakest, most incompetent disciples to contest for Lan Xichen's hand. Only Qinghe Nie sends someone capable of challenging Wen Xu for victory: their alpha heir Nie Mingjue - rumored betrothed of Lan Xichen, and the contestant everyone secretly hopes will win.
That is, everyone but the Wen - and an untrained, unskilled contestant named Meng Yao, a beta whose only hope for victory rides on the sponsorship of Wei Wuxian, the mysterious, terrifying and definitely murderous Monster of Yiling.

It was not the most accurate or most reliable method, but people were people, and the tedium of daily life would always bore them.
"I heard it was the Nie Sect leader's suggestion."

After thirteen years in the Burial Mounds, the Yiling Patriarch finally makes a public reappearance. Civilians are scared. Cultivators are outraged. Sect Leaders are concerned. Wei Wuxian has been too quiet, they say, and nobody knows what dark horrors the Burial Mounds may now contain.
Wei Wuxian wouldn't quite call them dark horrors, but the description wasn't too far off.
(tl;dr Wei Wuxian lives, raises a whole gaggle of demonic cultivator children, and the cultivation world panics.)

A New Year’s day, a drift of peach blossoms blown off the trees: each one, perhaps, the last he would see. There wasn’t a container in his mind big enough to hold years, decades, centuries.

“I had urgent business.” Zishu sat beside Beiyuan, glancing at his guests. The solemn young man in black beside Beiyuan was Beiyuan’s neighbour, the hostage Shamanet Wu Xi from subjugated Nanjiang who had grown up next door to Beiyuan. The stranger on the far left couldn’t be much older than Wu Xi, a smiling, pretty young man with a jade pin in his hair, dressed in rich dark teal robes with red accents, a white silk fan clasped in one elegant palm.

Zishu stifled the urge to roll his eyes, staying propped up on the warm rock by the river. He’d thought that he’d lost Wen Kexing through the crowds, but it’d been wishful thinking. With only the level of ability he had left after his self-inflicted punishment, Zishu wouldn’t be able to easily escape anyone semi-competent, let alone an adept like Kexing.

Wei Wuxian recognised the strain of his lungs and the twinge in his ribs like this body was the one he'd grown up in; familiar, yet poorly cared for. Something Wei Wuxian would have to fix if he was going to get anywhere in this life.

I will not fight back; I will not resist you at all, Hanguang-jun." That silvery suggestiveness crept into his voice again. "And a year and a day from now, you will come to me and I will deliver exactly the same to you."
Lan Wangji heard his brother's voice raised in sharp and incomprehensible protest. His own heart was beating too loudly for him to hear anything else.
