    “Just… be happy, okay?”

That’s the last thing Dan says before he gently lets the door fall into its lock behind him, the soft clicking more resounding, more final than any slam could’ve been.

Phil can handle a loud fight – Dan always comes back after those.

He’s not sure how to handle this soft goodbye into the night.

    Dan leaves.

Phil doesn't know how to bring him back home - he just knows he has to.

"I think I'm asexual," Dan breathes against the crook of Phil's neck, blinking back tears.

    There's a pause, then -

"Nice to meet you, asexual. I'm Phil," says Phil.

The way his breath sounds when he sleeps. The heat of him when he presses his forehead to mine. The dangerous, aching ease of it.

Think of Dancer. Think of Eo. Think of anything that is not the shape of Cassius’s mouth, nor the memory of his hands picking leaves from my hair.

    Summary

He watched from the shadows, as always. That’s when he saw the boy—no more than six or seven, copper hair like a fox kit’s tuft, and masive russet eyes. He’d slipped from behind his mother’s skirts, blinking at the crowd as if dropped into another world. Then his eyes fixed on Rhys’s.

    “You’re staring,” Rhys said quietly.

The boy flushed. “I wasn’t,” he murmured.

“Yes, you were.” Rhys stepped from the column, shadows clinging to him. “What’s your name?”

    “Lucien.”

    “And you are?”

Rhys glanced at his father, iron-crowned, power pressing the hall like a hand around its throat. “Rhysand,” he said softly.

Lucien’s eyes widened—not with fear, but awe and, strangely, delight. “That’s a nice name.”

    -----

Two boys who had once leaned against each other in stolen gardens became two men shaped by very different cages: one gilded with shadow, the other scorched by flame.
