“Fine,” he said. “We’ll have a contest.”
Henry blinked. “A contest.”
“Yes.”
“That’s your solution to everything.”
“And it works.”
Henry shook his head, but he was already laughing. “What would we even be measuring? Applause?”
Hans leaned back, crossing his arms with mock dignity. “Performance. Skill. Satisfaction.”
“You plan to ask for written testimonials?”
“If necessary.”

“Oh, what’s the matter?” He tried teasing the truth from him, “Are you scared?”
“No,” Henry said quickly, “but I don’t want to leave Rosa and Katherine alone… with Brabant.”
Rosa. He’d forgotten her title. Henry made a habit of that sometimes, but Hans had never rebuked him for it. It made it seem like they were friends of choice, rather than circumstance. Now he wondered whether the familiarity meant as much to Henry as it did him.
.
Much is uncertain between Hans and Henry following their night at the Kingfisher.

Summary
The boy was a nervous wreck. The rickety stool he was perched on tapped annoyingly against the floor as he squirmed like… well, like a sinner in the confessional. Godwin had reluctantly agreed to hear his confession after the young Lord Capon insisted he couldn’t trust any other priest with it. If anything, that made Godwin want to hear it even less, but he was, unfortunately, a good priest. Seeing the desperation in Capon’s still boyish face had plucked at his heartstrings and led him, against his better judgement, to sit across from him in his own room in the Devil’s Den.

Summary
"But I'm not just asking for myself," Hans continued, quieter. "If people start to wonder about the lack of an heir, it won't be me they turn on, we both know that. Jitka's reputation—she'll be worse than ruined when the gossip starts to come."
Or, when the heir to Rattay still can't sire a child one year into marriage, he comes begging for Henry's help. Henry thinks the task is simple, if insane: shoot a few loads in Jitka, then make like the wind so nobody suspects him.
Unfortunately for Hans, nothing is nearly ever so simple.
