Summary
“Fuck me,” Laurent said.
“You disappear for two days, you avoid me for a day, and now suddenly you’re demanding? I’m sleeping. Go away.”
“I told you not to fuck me,” Laurent said.
“No you didn’t,” Damen corrected. “You said, ‘You don’t want to fuck me.’ Which was not true.”

Summary
Leaving another gunfight and Dead or Alive posters behind in Norleans, Damen is on the run with some of his family’s wealth riding into the sparsely populated Great Plains toward the Rocky Mountains, pistols at his hips. With his family betrayed behind him, he expects never to return to The Ohios or the Texas Territories or Vèrginia, but with no specific goal in mind. Seeing a rough hand-carved sign with an arrow and the word “GOLDCUF” nailed to a log, he turns his horse and heads up into the mountains.
In a saloon, the painting behind the bar catches his eye. In the painting: a perfectly shaped lounging body, strong yet slender and lithe, in a deep blue corset, laced tightly through dozens of holes, top to bottom down the front, not quite exposing anything, yet giving the impression that any slight movement would reveal delights beyond belief. The top strings hung untied, begging to be slowly unstrung. Staring directly into the viewers’ eyes. Taking you straight on in challenge. Daring you to come closer and warning you to stay away. Bold and waiting to own you, not soft and yielding waiting to be possessed. No come-hither smile. Instead, the confident, chilly, in-control sapphire gaze of the town’s ice-cold bitch.

Lamen Week 2021 Day 8 - "It was one kingdom, once"
Damen tried not to crush his soda can because it still held several sips more of his favorite, cherry. Instead, he placed it with considerable care and attention off to the side and folded his hands. “It *was* one kingdom once,” he said in Veretian.
Lazar smacked the tabletop with his fist. Again. “There is no. Evidence. For. It.”

just a single twist to the backstory, and this could be how things really might have progressed. Hard to tell, of course, but it's a believable foray into how they might have met in a slightly different world. And sweet!

Summary
Laurent was six years old when the boy appeared in his fireplace.
Winter had come early in Arles that year. The thick glass pane of his window frosted over in a way that created fractals of light in the morning and made him know that magic was real, the type of magic that ignited his curiosity and emboldened his imagination to feats of whimsy and mischief. The trees outside stood bare; spindly things that cast shadows of twisted unnatural shapes, changing the soft glow of magic into menace that had Laurent drawing the bedcovers to his nose, eyes wide open on alert, then squeezed shut in fear. The shadows reminded him of Auguste’s stories: witches stealing children, wolves crunching bones and eating human flesh, foul creatures lurking in darkness to snatch ankles and drag them under the bed, never to be seen again.
But Auguste had never told him of olive skinned boys falling out of lit fireplaces.

Bookmarker's Notes
When the first chapter was posted, I said:An intriguing first chapter from the point of view of roughly a seven-year-old.
March 5-7, 2026 finish reading. An excellent story. Captures a lot of the feelings of the original with unusual variations. Plus oranges. -
