Summary
The Mighty Nein are very comfortable with one another, boundaries established and reconfigured and settled well before Essek finally joins them.
Casual touch is a given with them; proximity was a necessity for safety in their early days. This, however, stands in stark contrast with Essek’s many decades. Walls, barriers, layers, space. Separation kept Essek safe.
It’s not that he hates touch, no. It had simply grown unbearable after so long without. Unexpected or held for too long, it burned.
And then they won him over, slowly, over time, as they are wont to do. Rather, he is one of them now.

Patton’s jaw works. “I’m not avoiding—”
“Patton.”
Patton stops and looks at him for a moment. And then, he slumps in on himself, like a marionette with its strings cut. “Am I that obvious?” he asks, and he sounds so miserable that for a moment, Janus wants nothing more than to wrap him up in his arms and hold him until his pain goes away.
No one else seems to have noticed the way that Patton has been isolating himself lately. That means it's up to Janus to do something about it— which would be easier if he weren't completely out of his depth.
(Alternatively: Janus isn't used to touch. But for Patton, he'll do his best.)

He walks forward, crouching over the snake, and when it doesn’t stir at all, he works up his courage and pokes it, just a little. Its scales are warm and smooth under his fingertip, and he resists the urge to stroke them. He doubts he could get away with that.
“Janus?” he asks, trying to keep the somewhat hysterical laughter from his voice. “That you?”
Thomas didn't know that Janus could turn into an actual snake, but he's glad to hang out with him regardless. More than glad; ecstatic, even, because he's been trying to figure out how to befriend him for ages, and this seems like a good first step. What he can't figure out is why human-Janus is being so weird about it.
(Alternatively: Janus doesn't trust easily. He wishes he could stop trusting Thomas— it would be so much less terrifying.)

Patton likes to playfully claim his heart skips a beat and he feels weak whenever the strict doctor with the awkward kindness and the gentle hands touches him. In reality, his heart has been damaged from the day he was born. But it was still a good, kind heart. It was just a little different from the others, he likes it though! He likes to imagine it is trying to make up for the little time it can give him by letting him feel so many wonderful things and he even made a sweet, dramatic friend at the hospital. Roman made it worth all that trouble his messy little heart puts him through when he hugs him! However, lately, it would not beat quite right, even when the handsome doctor smiles at him.
Roman does his best to support of his beloved little friend, as they begin the painful wait for a heart-transplant. He vows to be brave for Patton, even though he is facing his own troubles. All of those pathogens are out to get him, he is sure of it! And what about that rattling in his chest or that itch he cannot seem to get rid of? Why won’t anybody take him seriously around here?! At least the exasperated nurse that always scowls at him is a delight – at least in terms of looks, his bedside manners certainly are quite lacking!- Language:

Summary
Damien never wanted soulmates. When his fifteenth birthday came, he prayed he wouldn't receive a "hint" - a way soulmates are connected to help find each other. And to Damien's horror, the universe gives him multiple soulmates. He's determined to not let them find out about them. He wants to let them live in ignorant bliss and not force them to deal with him. As Damien grows older, he moves away and goes to college - He even manages to find a boyfriend that he chose himself, and Damien tells himself that he's happy. But on Damien's twentieth birthday, the universe gives him and his soulmates another hint - and this one is not one Damien can avoid.
