Zhongli sighs, long-suffering and somehow majestic even in disappointment. “Ah.”
Childe blinks. “Was that—did a bird just scream at us?”
“Not a bird,” Zhongli mutters, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “A menace.”
From the wreckage, emerges Venti. Archon of Freedom. Patron Saint of Wine Hangovers. God of Ruining Romantic Walks by the Sea with His Uninvited Commentary.
“ZHONGLI, MY DEAREST ROCKPILE!” Venti bellows, staggering upright and throwing his arms out like a deranged scarecrow. “My FAVORITE grumpy slab of geo. And is that—is that a Harbinger? Are you two on a date? Am I interrupting something steamy and forbidden and vaguely illegal?”
Zhongli, to his eternal credit, does not yell. He simply blinks once, sits down his tea with the kind of solemnity reserved for national mourning, and mutters:
“Barbatos.”In which Venti crashes Zhongli and Childe’s not-a-date, and the harbor will never know peace again.

Summary
Zhongli, in order to fulfill a contract, goes to Snezhnaya but in the middle of fulfilling his duty he runs into a Fatui General drenched in blood standing in his way. Somehow, he seems intent on forming a bond with this Liyuean man he’s never met before and although Zhongli is not as keen on forming relationships with humans, he can’t help but feel intrigued by those depthless eyes on such a young man.
__________________________Zhongli steps forward out of concern for the general, kneeling before him.
“You really should just give in. Are you so willing to lose a couple ribs over such a fight?”
“Ah, Xiangsheng,” The general’s foreign tongue wraps over the Liyuean word in near perfect pronunciation, “For a chance to battle against you, anything would be worth it, even my life.” -

Before his eyes, Zhongli shattered into a million pieces of light.
It was blinding, and Childe covered his eyes in reflex. The light peeled away in layers, solidifying into three distinct figures.
One emerged broad-shouldered and frowning, with two horns atop his head that curled with amber tips; his very presence rattled the air. Gold kissed hands that looked more like claws, his white robes marked with dirt and ash.
Morax. The brutish God of War. From the beginning of Zhongli’s long life.
Another stepped out, with the same pair of horns as the other, clothed in regal finery, dark brown robes embroidered with threads of gold, similar to Zhongli’s current attire but far more elegant. His posture sharp, eyes cutting through the space immediately to Childe, lingering with an unnerving amusement.
Rex Lapis. The God of Commerce and Trade, the establisher of Liyue. A man for a taste of all things fine.
And in the centre, left kneeling and breathless, Zhongli himself—the man Childe knew—steadying his own balance, calm but pale.
→ In which, Zhongli is split into 3 versions of himself, and Childe is left to deal with the mess.

Summary

Summary
After watching Zhongli and Xiao dance around each other for thousands of years, Venti decides it’s time he gave his poor dragon some help. It doesn't hurt that Venti himself may have a personal interest in the matter. Figuring out a way to draw Xiao away from his duties for a few days shouldn't be too hard, right?

Childe scoots closer, holding the tail-blanket close to him. “You’re an adeptus, Rex Lapis, an Archon. That’s only a bonus if you ask me. Pretty hot, too.” He gives the tail fur a playful tug. “And look at this! If you come back to Snezhnaya some time, we won’t even have to worry about the cold. What’s there not to like?”
Zhongli doesn't meet Childe's eyes. “For one such as myself, the transiency of one’s lifespan is not a concept that can be easily related to. Yet it embellishes your life in every action, no moment that you wasted as you strive toward your goals, for it would be foolish to while away the finite on needless activities. It troubles me that you might find my company lacking, due to my inability to relate to the same existential experience as your own."
Oh, this ridiculous man.
When Childe wakes to Zhongli possessing a tail and a pair of antlers, he's pleasantly intrigued, but for Zhongli they serve only as a reminder of the difference between their respective natures. Childe gives him reassurance and snuggles.

“You’re not…” Childe’s head may have been angled like a baffled puppy, but he couldn’t help it, “Put off by all of that?”
As the disk of orange dipped below the Liyuan waters and the twilight sky remained illuminated by dusky remnants of what had been, Zhongli’s golden-edged features took on a radiance of their own. It wasn’t the lights playing tricks on him when Childe saw the man’s eyes gleam, and he craved to know what that meant.
“Perhaps I give you too much credit.” He was smiling, now, and Childe’s breath caught in his throat. That was certainly new. “Maybe you do not listen as much as I thought you do.”
Childe processes just how different Rex Lapis, God of Contracts, and Zhongli, Wangsheng Funeral Consultant, really are.
They coincide at the worst of times, and it does some truly awful things to his heart.

Or, I took a look at two Genshin fan lore of Morax being the geo dragon sovereign, and Zhongli is not Morax, and decided to run with it.
