“Because he-” starts Olethra, but Marya cuts her off.
“I think this is a conversation for you to have with Gotch in your own time, Torse,” she says. And then “Olethra, stop meddling. You know the rules.”
Olethra pouts. “Fine.”
Torse is barely paying attention to her. There is the palest, prettiest red flush across the bridge of Maxwell's nose, bringing attention to a small white scar on it. He doesn't know the rules that Marya is talking about, but doesn't much care, too distracted by following the pink curve of Maxwell's ears with his gaze, the way his brown-black lashes frame large dark eyes.

That solitude didn't stop with the infirmary, or his own room once he could no longer stand Verric's ghost pressing in on him like a thumb on a bruise. He padded barefoot through the Lighthouse and the grounds under Taash's watchful eyes, passing only awkward, distant conversation with his fellows, who seemed to be giving him a respectful, and irritating, wide berth. For days he was a ghost on the grounds of their home base; sure, he wasn't banned from spending time in the main areas with the others, and he was able to join in on meals like normal, but… it was off, and wrong, and terrible.
Rook hated it, whatever it was. He'd even tried instigating something more intimate with Emmrich, who had smoothly redirected towards a shared pot of tea and snuggling quietly by the fire. It was lovely. Emmrich was lovely but he needed… fuck. He needed more.
