Summary
The sea has always been known to hide monsters, great beasts of note that will take for themselves the goods and lives of those aboard merchant ships and pirate vessels alike. But where the naval forces of Ravka have failed, there are stories of one pirate - Captain Sturmhond of the Volkvolny - who has managed to survive these waters. No one really knows why Queen Zoya has put her trust in the hands of a ruthless pirate captain, but the truth of it is really quite clear:
If they cannot find the source of these monsters, and put a stop to them, Ravka will not survive. Therefore, it is up to Captain Sturmhond, and the crew of the Volkvolny to not only track down and subdue the creatures, but to come back alive. With the help of a tracker, an acrobat, a sharpshooter, and a thief, they set off into the seas to find the cause.

What Nikolai hadn’t said, that morning before the world started crashing down around them all over again, was that he thought of Mal, too. Of the twisted-together web the three of them made. His engagement to Alina, how tremulous the thing was, how wary Nikolai felt of hoping too badly for it to happen. Alina and Mal’s history, warped and tightly knotted and strained at the edges. The uncertain shape pulled between himself and Mal, an understanding he can’t put words to and a faith held in the unwavering needle of his lucky compass, warm against the skin of Mal’s chest. Nikolai wonders if he’s the only one who can see it- the three of them, Ravka spread out beneath their hands, back-to-back-to-back. He wonders if he’s the only one who wants it, fearsome and vicious and hungry.
He doesn’t think so; but he’s been wrong on occasion.

Summary
Mal has been able to see apparitions since childhood, only made worse by his years as a soldier stationed at the most dangerous camp in Ravka’s endless civil war. When the oft-missing and publicly disgraced Prince Nikolai shows up at their camp, the two of them quickly grow close, but Mal begins to sense that something sinister lives behind Nikolai’s charming smile. A desperate search for aid pushes them deep into the heart of Ravka’s hidden forests where they discover a house that Mal has only seen in his dreams and a creature inside that’s been calling to him for his entire life.
