Shane kissed him, gentle at first, then harder, nipping at his bottom lip. He felt the scab give a little, the faint taste of iron, and he jerked back, startled at himself.
Ilya just blinked, a little confused, and then smiled.
“Too rough, no?”
His English got messier when he was tired, vowels thicker, consonants dropped.
“You are always gentle. You can bite if you want.”
Shane shook his head, covering it with a laugh.
“Not tonight. You need to heal.”
Ilya accepted this with a shrug, already halfway to sleep, arm slung heavy over Shane’s waist.
Shane stared at the ceiling, the taste lingering, heat and confusion twisting through him.He didn’t sleep much.

What was unusual was the fact that he immediately slammed the laptop shut when Ilya walked into the room.
Ilya stopped mid-step.“…What was that?”
“Nothing.”
“That was not nothing.”
Shane leaned back in the chair, attempting a casual expression that fooled absolutely no one.
“I was just reading something.”
“You closed computer like it was government secret.”
“I didn’t.”
“You absolutely did.”
Shane crossed his arms.
“You’re being dramatic. Anyway I actually have to go.”
Ilya blinked.
“You just got home.”
“Yeah.”
“And now you leave again?”
“It’s just… a thing.”
“What thing?”
Shane grabbed his jacket.
“Just a thing thing.”
“That is not explanation.”
“It’s a temporary thing.”
“What kind of temporary thing?”
Shane hesitated for half a second.
Which was all the confirmation Ilya needed that something extremely suspicious was happening.“Just a class.” Shane said finally.
“A class.”
“Yes.”
“What class?”
“A… cultural class.”

Summary
As if on cue, Anya happily flopped across Shane’s lap and settled there like she had always belonged there.
Ilya stared.
“Unbelievable.”
Shane beamed.
Across the couch, Ilya was sprawled sideways with Shane’s reading glasses perched on his nose.
That part had been a discovery.
Apparently Shane’s eyes were terrible.
“Your prescription is aggressive.” Ilya complained.
“You’re the one who stares at your phone in the dark.”
“Because my eyes are strong.”
“They clearly aren’t!”
“I refuse to believe this.”
Shane snorted softly and flipped a page in his book.
That had been another unexpected benefit.
“I can’t believe this.” he murmured.
Ilya glanced over.
“What.”
“I can read without glasses.”
“…You’re welcome.”

Shane skated away, his shoulders slumping, realizing he had arrived too late.
Ilya had already found his place among the older, objectively “cooler” boys. He knew this feeling all too well. No matter how hard he tried to belong, he always seemed to be the one left out, an overly excited, obnoxious nuisance.
Dejected, he made his way to the right side of the rink, where his mom had said she’d be if he needed anything. Reaching the barrier, he opened the small gate and sat down on the bench, his hockey stick clattering dramatically beside him. Struggling to get a grip on his laces through his reinforced gloves.The excitement had already melted away, now he just wanted to see his mom and maybe have a cup of warm chamomile tea to cheer him up. Directing his gaze back down at his half-untied skate.
A cold spray of ice hit his face. Shane squeezed his eyes shut, trying to escape the sting of the particles.“Ух ты, Shane! You are here!”
