Kira let the silence stretch between them for a moment, letting the words settle. She traced the rim of her cup absently. Then she looked up again, more curious now than skeptical.
“But why me?”
Yumeko’s grin returned, brighter now. “Because you’re you.”
Kira gave her a look.
Yumeko laughed softly. “Okay, fine. First—your school’s not exactly obscure. I’ve seen your videos. You can actually lead. Not many women can, not at the level it takes to win. And I don’t just want to show up—I want to go far.”
“You want to win.”
“I want to be good,” Yumeko corrected. “Winning’s a bonus. But I want to earn the space I take up.”
That answer landed. Kira felt it somewhere lower in her chest.
Yumeko went on, still smiling, but now with a touch more mischief. “And, I mean… I’m five-two. You really want to see me trying to spin a head taller pro around the floor?”

Summary
While Ilya was in the CT, Trinity had found a video of him getting checked. As gruesome a scene as it was, what stuck with her was the way Hollander had hovered. Cliff Marleau, a former teammate of Ilya’s from the Raiders, was unsurprisingly the first to his side after decking the Tampa defenseman, but Hollander was hot on his heels. She assumed that their allegiance for the sake of All-Stars would allow for some visible concern. Hollander was more than concerned.
