Sam watched hazily as the blood oozed from the fresh cuts, licking long strips down his palms where it pooled in their depths. When it overflowed, it spilled on the wet, yellowed tiles of the bathroom. He watched with inconsequential fascination as the blood swirled into delicate patterns, mixing and diluting with the water on the floor.

“It was…It was 2017,” Jack recalls. He casts his eyes around. “But this isn’t 2017.”
The girl squints at Jack. She keeps a wary eye on him, even though he’s not planning on making any sudden moves, and sidesteps to a newspaper, which is laying open on a table nearby.
Jack takes the newspaper and glances at the top.
“1984?” he reads, and looks up at her. “Who are you?”
The girl shakes her head. “I am El,” she says quietly. “You should not be here.”
