Before he becomes Jack Kelly – before the events that lead him down that road – Jack was named Francis Sullivan, after his Pa.
He’s a runty kind of kid; small and skinny, with hollow-looking cheeks. The other kids in the neighbourhood think he’s strange, this small boy who never speaks, with his filthy clothes and dirty fingernails, his greasy hair growing long, long like a girl’s. His Ma used to cut it for him, but since she died, she doesn’t.
