“Damn,” he said with a low whistle. “Nine a.m. on the dot. You really don’t fuck around.” He cocked his head, grin skewed. “So how’d it go? Was I right?”
Kaiba blinked at him. The words didn’t land. His stomach pitched cold. Jounouchi’s face was familiar—of course it was—but the question, the why of it, slid away from him. What was he supposed to answer? What had he been right about? His mind reached, slipped, skidded. Panic flared hard and sharp in his chest. He didn’t know. He didn’t know.
He stared at Jounouchi, pulse hammering.
“Kaiba?” Jounouchi’s brow furrowed. He leaned closer, voice shifting, uneasy now. “Kaiba, your nose…”
Kaiba lifted his hand and felt it—wet. His fingertips came away smeared red. Pomegrante?
“The fuck—” Jounouchi started, but didn’t finish.
The room tilted, a vertigo that dragged Kaiba sideways. The instruments beeped wild, the doctors shouting, hands gripping his shoulders. His vision smeared into a wash of white and red, then black. Kaiba’s body gave out, and he fell into nothing.
