Feng Xin had never paid much attention to how he looked.
He always thought that if Mu Qing got dirty, maybe he would look more human. More touchable. He thought that dark colors would diffuse the halo that was constantly around him, even when he was like this: wearing undyed linens, gray-ish looking bags under his eyes, his hair a little frizzy from training and cleaning all day.
The choker had the opposite effect. It had Mu Qing looking ethereal, untouchable: the type of beauty to be gawked at and worshiped, but never tainted. And even after a day’s worth of labor, his hair still smelled faintly of cherry blossoms.
Time was frozen, even as Xie Lian put his arms around Mu Qing, ever the tactile affectionate type. “Doesn’t he look beautiful, A-Xin?”
Feng Xin didn’t need to think about it. He just nodded.
“V-very beautiful.”
Mu Qing’s eyes were wide, the tops of his cheeks pink, the pale glow from the moonlight tinting his skin slightly blue, reflecting on the round pendant hanging from his throat by velvety black fabric and—
—to this day, he’s yet to witness anything more beautiful.

His eyes were swimming with an intense emotion as he gazed at Feng Xin. It overtook his stare, shining brightly as his face followed along to mirror it. It was an emotion that was slowly becoming more and more familiar to Feng Xin the longer he looked at Mu Qing.
Mu Qing chuckled lightly, his weight dropping onto Feng Xin who still held him by the arm as he burrowed his face in Feng Xin’s shoulder, “You already know why.”
It took Mu Qing 800 years to admit to himself that he loved Feng Xin. It took Feng Xin 800 years to find that out and open his heart again.

Next to him, Feng Xin suddenly coughs, interrupting his own monologue.
“Don’t hurt yourself,” Mu Qing says with another roll of his eyes. “Maybe if you stopped swearing so much…?”
Another cough—this one is rougher somehow. Feng Xin’s mouth flies up to cover his mouth, and for a second, his expression looks panicked enough that Mu Qing almost feels bad for mocking him.
When he lowers his hand a moment later and unfurls his palm, it’s to reveal a small cluster of pale pink petals, slightly crumpled. They look like the blossoms that come spiralling off the plum trees surrounding the Royal Holy Pavilion, neat and elegant.

At first, they think it’s a total blessing. Finally an excuse to not deal with each other! Surely this means less fighting, more productivity!
They’re told to stay away from each other until the cure is found, but habit is habit… They find themselves trying to sit with each other during meetings, waiting up for the other to walk side-by-side, or just… going about their day together as they have for 800 years. Every time, the curse acts up. It’s so annoying! They accidentally trigger it each hour!
