Putting the now dirty cloth on the ground, Coolkid looked up to see someone new in the doorway.
Specifically, his father.
The man looked panicked, glasses askew and panting like he’d run all the way here, which he probably did if what Coolkid had heard was running.
Coolkid sniffled as newfound tears formed, reaching towards him as he rushed forward, crouching in front of Coolkid with worried mumbling, feeling his forehead and his cheeks with the back of his hands.
“Dad,” Coolkid said, “I think ‘m sick.”

here had been far better things to do than give it a proper burial, so the decision had been made to dispose of its body in the lake. Some raised concerns about toxins coming from its corpse potentially harming any wildlife, but no one had even seen as much of a glimpse of a fish, so that argument was tossed aside.
Suffice to say, no one was particularly thrilled now when Chance practically sprinted into the main cabin, frantically yapping about how something was wrong with the lake.
They left no one behind when they went to check, that risk couldn't be taken, they were stronger as a group, so they stuck together.
It took a moment for everyone to fully register what exactly was happening, but slowly, the pieces came together. The frantic little waves concentrated around one spot, the faint silhouette of something beneath the surface, and finally, a clawed hand breaching the water for just a second before being swallowed up again.
