Summary
Theo doesn’t go back in the cage. He’s allowed to hose himself down and drag himself with a small meal back to his cot in the cell. The door is closed, but the lock doesn’t click into place.
Theo doesn’t eat. The bowl of meal sits on his trembling knees as he presses his hands flat under his thighs and rocks back and forth on the edge of the cot, mouth opening and closing, eyes distant and cold as glass.
You crouch in front of him.
“Theo,” you try again, the first time in years.
“Tara,” he says, shocking you. Your eyes widen. “I wish you were here.”
But he’s not looking at you. Through you, perhaps, but at the wrong angle.
“It wasn’t worth it,” he says. “It wasn’t. It wasn’t. It wasn’t.” His breaths are wet, but his lashes stay dry. “Not for your heart. Not for it to be treated this way.”
“Theo,” you cry out.
It’s his twelfth birthday. It feels cruel that now, in more ways than one, you'll never be his big sister again.

He certainly hadn't expected to run into the bard like this--fending him off in the woods, trying desperately to help him break out of the spell that has him slashing at Geralt's throat before one of them ends up dead.

Summary
The moment Liam flicks the lighter on and touches it to the roughly shaved area where the entrance wound lies, Theo can’t seem to help the tiniest flinch. He can hear the strain of Theo’s teeth as they grind together, almost crack from the pressure. His breathing is ragged, his heartbeat barely wrangled down to normal.
“I know, Teddy, I know, just hang on for a couple more seconds,” Liam chants under his breath.
He’s been holding his breath without realizing it. The stench of burning flesh, too fresh to even trick his mind into recalling the scent of meat on a grill, would have his stomach in knots if he were inhaling any air. A distant part of Liam’s brain, though, recognizes grimly that the only thing Theo can do at this point is to breathe through the pain, and he’s tired of wondering how well acquainted his boyfriend (not boyfriend?) has been since age nine with the smell of bodies burning and rotting.

Tamora looks like she’s about to whip out a hand and slice him somewhere on his slightly singed skin just for that comment, but at the last second she refrains. She goes on, “Electrocution…waterboarding…deprivation of stimuli…those are all ordinary for you. We can skip past those and jump right into the advanced stuff, can’t we?”
