He says it just like that. Because if you want someone to be your friend, you have to ask. Right? That’s how it works.
The boy is quiet. For a second, Mike thinks he might run away or call for his mom. But instead, the boy looks at him like he’s deciding something important. Then he nods. Very slowly.
Something warm spreads through Mike’s chest.
“Cool!” he grins. “My name’s Mike. Mike Wheeler.”
He smiles wide, not thinking about his missing teeth, and sticks out his hand—because that’s what his dad does when he meets people.
The boy hesitates, then shakes it anyway.
“I’m Will. Will Byers.”
His voice is quiet. Mike feels like he should listen more carefully to him than to anyone else.

Healing that massive queerbaiting. Doing Byler justice. Will Byers deserves to accept himself and achieve love. Mike Wheeler deserves to accept himself and realize his love.
The story takes place immediately after the finale of Stranger Things 5. Mike is processing his grief over the loss of Eleven and is writing his book/gameplay – in the process, he looks back at his and the groups memories and begins to realize his suppressed feelings for Will.
Will never got over Mike because he really wasn't just his Tammy. He also mourns Eleven. He has fully accepted his sexuality, but there is no epilogue boyfriend in his life (only in Mike's imagination). They miss each other very much and meet again after their separation.
