Ok, well if he was going to try to work this out, he was going to have to name the issues. Mac. It was Mac. Mac had given him something he couldn’t find anywhere else. Mac was why Dennis didn’t care to find women.

Dennis is not good at making people feel loved. That's why it didn’t work out with Brian Jr., there’s just certain things he doesn’t know how to do, can’t do, a way he was brought up jagged and splintered and wrong. Mac is so earnest with his feelings, so willing to be vulnerable and open, that it's embarrassing, the way Dennis can feel himself coming up short again and again when Mac gives something and Dennis wants to give something back but his voice catches in his throat and he falters.

“Nothing,” Dennis says quickly. “We are doing,” he looks at Mac, “Nothing.”
“Okay, but like,” Mac leans in and says in a voice that he clearly thinks is quieter, though it is, in fact, not any quieter at all, “Are we?”

One day, Charlie comes into the bar with a flyer for a cornhole competition. Everyone's excited until Frank points out it's for married couples only. Naturally, it only takes hours for everyone to be married. Regular gang hijinks and antics ensue.

“Oh, would you just do it Dennis? If you need an officiator man I know where we can get one real cheap.” Frank said with some suspicious tone.
“First of all Frank, it’s officiant, and second, I don’t need your overseas slave man. I am not getting fake married and that is final!

Summary
It's Tuesday night. They should be watching Predator or Die Hard, sitting on their couch at opposite ends while Dennis pretends Mac's not staring at him out of the corners of his eyes, but they're not. Instead, Dennis is in the hospital chair next to Mac's bed, pretending to be his husband for reasons that he doesn't want to think about right now. He just wants Mac to wake up. Well, if he decides to wake up, that is. If Mac decides him and the gang are worth coming back to at all.
Dennis just wishes that things could go back to normal. Before Mac decided he loved Dennis and decided to shove it down his throat, before things got stiff and awkward and stuck between them. Then Mac wouldn't be in this goddamn hospital bed and none of this ever would have happened in the first place.
If only Dennis remembered to be careful what you wish for.
Set after season 14. No major character deaths.

‘Do you really think you need it?’ Dennis talks over him, too loud. He stops right after, a look on his face like that wasn’t exactly what he meant to say. ‘I mean, like. Grindr. Do you really use it that much?’
‘You just told me I was using it too much,’ Mac points out, mystified.
Dennis bites his lip again. Mac wishes he’d stop doing that; it makes it so hard to concentrate on what he’s saying. Is he making his eyes big like that on purpose? Focus, Mac, for fuck’s sake.
‘Yeah,’ Dennis hedges. ‘I just meant, you know. Do you really need it anymore? Like,’ he surges past the question, twisting his hands in front of him like a child caught mid-fuck up. Mac could tell him he doesn’t need to be concerned; he has no idea what Dennis’s game is here.

Summary
It isn't always sunny in Philadelphia. It's been raining for almost a month straight in the middle of summer and the storms are concentrated around South Philly. The sun comes out when Mac smiles.
The warmer and drunker and more happy-drunk they get the slower the rain gets, until it slows again into a deadly, wet silence.
“Think that’s the end of it?” asks Dee, half falling out of the booth as she looks out of the window. Her hair has dried to little ringlet curls like she used to have when they were little.
Dennis shrugs. “Dunno.” He feels warm and loose. “Keeps stopping and starting, just needs to make its mind up and stop.”
“Is it the end of the world?” she asks, cheeks ruddy with drink she looks like a child.
“The end of the world wouldn’t start somewhere like Philly,” says Mac, “it’d be in… Jerusalem or something.”

When you make eye contact with your soulmate, you'll see colours. When they look away, the world goes grey again. Dennis is just trying to buy some drugs.
Now it’s there, he keeps catching Mac’s eye. In the corridor the world will become technicolour and he’ll see mismatching outfits and the colour of socks he chose this morning and the warm slope of Mac’s shoulders and the way a girl’s lips are pink but not as pink as Mac’s pout when he refuses to meet Dennis’s eyes again.
At the track after school he’ll make eye contact with Mac, selling under the bleachers, and his knees almost buckle as the grass turns this vivid blue that isn’t blue, the grass is green, as the songs say, and daisies have a yellow spot in the middle, not grey.
He looks over his shoulder in class to find Mac already staring at him, and colour blooms from Mac in brilliant, vibrant swirls.
