He remembered his hands, clutching the sink, he remembered his eyes being the only thing visible in the dark mirror, he remembered sitting down, remembered the faint sliver of light pushed beneath the door, how his teeth chattered, how the sweat crawled down his back. He remembered thinking he could feel it, that gradual alleviation, like a hand loosening its grip, or a parting of clouds—like being twenty-five and floating in bright cerulean.
He remembered, and then he quit, no longer remembering anything. He just stopped. There wasn't anything there. Not even a single, solitary protuberance unearthing itself out of that agony-cold wasteland, no wisp, no sliver of light to illuminate it. He'd just gone—maybe even returned, fleetingly, to that nothingness which preceded him.
Then he'd waked.
