“As if war would fix that," you spat.
When Hakutoku swept a hand out, his sleeves grazed the board, scattered black and white stones. “I do not revel in war, little lord, but neither will I shy away from it. For my people, I will pay any price.”
You searched his face and found nothing but earnest devotion.

“Who’s Jason Grace?” Piper asks carefully.
Annabeth can’t look at her. Eventually, Butch takes pity on her and says, “Jason is one of our campers. He went missing a few days ago, and Annabeth’s going out of her mind with worry.”
“He’s my brother,” Annabeth says.
It doesn't matter that they aren't related by blood, or that Jason is technically Annabeth's uncle—they returned Poseidon's trident together, retrieved the Golden Fleece, revived Thalia and lost Bianca and Luke, and when Jason descended into the Styx he told her, later, as Luke's corpse lay between them and Jason's tears burned hot and wet against her collar, that her image in the black waters was the only thing preventing him from drowning.
“He’s my brother,” Annabeth repeats, and tries not to cry.
The son of Zeus goes missing. Perseus Jackson, son of Neptune, takes his place.

What could've been but never was.
(The oldest one of the trio steps in front of the other two when Annabeth descends upon the canyon, wary. He's drenched to the bone, even though they're in the middle of the Grand Canyon and the closest water source is miles away. Though he's staring at the pegasi with his mouth wide open, his dark hair and shockingly green eyes give him an aura of confidence that most demigods don't usually have when they're dripping in water and smoking from the tips of their hair.
Annabeth doesn't look at him. She sees his shoe - burnt off, like a lightning bolt had struck it then gave up halfway - and immediately snarls, "Where is he?")
(In which Jason is Greek and Percy is Roman and not much changes, really.)
