"Oh," says Lan Zhan. He seems to be searching for something else to say. "I believe it is oversubscribed," he says finally.
"As it should be," says Wei Ying, and does not tell him that he has all of Lan Zhan's albums downloaded onto his phone, listened to over and over when he's on a train, a plane, waiting for a taxi, has followed his career since he overheard half a Mendelssohn when they were fifteen.

Summary
The cultivation world is rebuilding from the wreckage of the Sunshot Campaign, but Wangji and his shield brother Wei Wuxian are still completely attached at the hip. It is sad that Lan Xichen’s brother is stuck in the youthful pattern of - ah, no polite way to say it: exchanging handjobs with his shield brother - rather than moving on to more adult pursuits.
On the other hand, now that the war is over, Wangji does seem so much more open and happy than he was as a boy. He smiles sometimes, mostly at Wei Wuxian. Once, he even took an afternoon off. So Lan Xichen can let Wangji’s closeness with his shield brother lie for a time, while he finishes maturing. -

Wei Wuxian drops his hand, leans one shoulder into the stunted door frame. “Oh. Okay. So. Why are you here, exactly?”
“The Institute sent me to assist you,” the ridiculously beautiful cardigan owner says, “as your familiar.”
Wei Wuxian laughs as if it’s a joke, although the man’s stony expression makes it clear that any humor gleaned from him is likely unintentional.
“Well, uh, I appreciate your,” Wei Wuxian says, “you know, time, but everything is under control here, actually.”
With impeccable timing, a tea-kettle sound keens from the kitchen, followed by a contained bang.

Summary
Wei Wuxian remembers, a long time ago in basically another life, a college party where he managed to bully Lan Wangji into taking a single shot. The Second Jade had gone bleary and fallen asleep on a couch almost immediately. Wei Wuxian figured that in the intervening years his tolerance would have improved, or that a drunk Lan Zhan would immediately be followed by a sleeping Lan Zhan.
This supposition was, as it turns out, incorrect. Grown-ass adult Lan Zhan is, when drunk, something Wei Wuxian can only describe as white girl wasted.
Or: Lan Zhan gets drunk on Capitol Hill. Wei Wuxian isn't supposed to be the responsible one, but by god, he's gonna do it.

He startles, glancing around. Wei Wuxian had just been right beside him. They hadn’t been speaking, after Wei Wuxian’s few abortive attempts at making conversation. Because Jiang Cheng hadn’t wanted to speak to him. He never wants to speak to him, ever again, because walking alongside Wei Wuxian, being on a night hunt with him— it’s too much. Even if he no longer wants Wei Wuxian dead, how can participate in these farces? How can he get so close to the thing he wants, only to remember he’ll never have it? He can’t let Wei Wuxian make casual conversation. He can’t allow him to weasel his way back into Jiang Cheng’s good graces, his heart. Because Jiang Cheng won’t survive it. He knows this very well.
What starts as a simple competition during a night hunt quickly spirals out of control, leaving Jiang Cheng to confront his fears, his feelings, his inadequacies, and Wei Wuxian.

Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.

Summary
Bilbo Baggins might be in over his head. He’s purchased an old stone house atop a hill overlooking a city he doesn’t know, and plans to live quietly, largely ignoring the rest of the world. But it’s early April, the rainy season, and the roof leaks, and there's something strange about Bywater House that he can't quite figure out.
Thorin Oakenshield is in his fourth month of trying to reconcile his own grief with his failures at anything remotely resembling a competent single parent, living out of a shoebox flat with Fíli (seven, sullen, and stubborn as hell) and Kíli (five, resilient but cracking), working crap jobs and hating everything including himself.
Under the cover of rainy afternoons and sleepless nights, roof repairs and building restoration, Bilbo and Thorin try to figure out how one navigates isolation, and how one breaks out of it. Every step they manage to take forward finds them dragged back again; every question asked has too many answers, or too few. This is a story about living in a world where everyone is on their own, always, and how things go on.
