Kenjirou thinks he can see some of the gold from the autumn leaves melting in Goshiki’s eyes, which are fixed on Kenjirou’s hands, gently folded atop his knees. When his hand reaches out to brush fingers against Kenjirou’s own, he lets him.
“I think I want this forever,” Goshiki says, voice barely above a whisper.
Kenjirou bites his tongue, feels his vision going funny from the excess of absolute adoration building up in his chest. When Goshiki looks up at him, he decides that the gold in his eyes is far brighter, far richer than anything that the changing leaves may try to imitate.
He wraps his fingers around Goshiki’s properly.
“Me too.”

It seemed that Shiratorizawa and Aoba Johsai captains always had a bit more going on between them than most.
To Yuutarou, his friendship with Shiratorizawa’s current rival captain, Goshiki Tsutomu, is somewhat of a blessing. There’s no enmity between them, no scowling across the net at each other.

So many things swirl in Yuutarou’s head as he racks his brain for why any of this right now is happening. Goshiki is facing him again, eyes wide, almost pleading. Yuutarou becomes entranced by them. “So… you’re not together?”
Yuutarou swallows, throat going dry and heart thumping hard in his rib cage. Why is he asking that? He almost wishes Kunimi was awake since he’s the one who would be best to handle answering these questions, especially considering how hard Yuutarou’s heart aches to be Goshiki’s. “N-No…” He answers hesitantly, still trapped in Goshiki’s gaze.
Something shifts quickly in the eyes Yuutarou is so transfixed on. Yuutarou isn’t sure why or how, but they both move instantly. There’s a mutual understanding that clicks into place as soon as a breath leaves Goshiki’s parted lips.

It’s their first date, although Akira feels like they’ve been together longer. They’ve hung out ever since they met by chance at the local stadium, and eventually… Well, Tsutomu apparently got the balls to ask him out on a date. A real date. Like… dinner at a fancy restaurant date. Akira can’t lie to himself that, at the time, his heart floundered gracelessly in his chest and had accepted far too fast for it to have been considered a tentative decision.

“I’m quitting volleyball.”
The words float through Kenjirō’s ears and echo, bouncing off the walls of his mind like the screensaver of an old DVD player.
It’s late, hours past curfew, and the two are sitting in the breakout space of the dormitory, surrounded by nothing but pitch black. The kotatsu they’re in isn’t even on, but they huddle under it all the same, seeking warmth in the heavy blankets.
“You’ll be expelled,” he says. Even to himself, he can hear that his voice struggles to be even. “You’re here on a sports scholarship. You’re nothing to this school without volleyball.”
An incentive. Or rather, a bind. Either way, something for Goshiki to bite onto and stay, but Kenjirō doesn’t feel Goshiki’s teeth sink into his bait. Rather, he recoils from it, dragging his legs out of the comfort of the kotatsu to stand up. Even in the darkness of the night, Kenjirō can see how the other boy wavers, his legs struggling to carry him away.
(Or, Goshiki gives up volleyball and Kenjirō finds out he's in love.)

Being angry is easy. He can be angry about the loss and let people pass it off as his usual dramatics or pettiness. He can practically hear Iwaizumi say, “Oikawa’s just being a brat again,” like he has before about so many things.
Because Oikawa Tooru is many things. He is angry and he is petty and he is a perfectionist and he is determined and he is a leader and he is proud, so painfully proud, and he is, when all is said and done, eighteen years old.
He is eighteen years old, and he’s far too young to feel like this is the end of the road for him, but that’s what it feels like.
