Chapter Text

The sound of an alarm clock blared through the small apartment, signifying it was time for Veronica to wake up. The woman in question groaned and shoved her face deeper into her plush pillow, desperately trying to drown out the annoying noise.

Eventually the brunette gave in and rolled over to turn the device off. She groaned louder at the idea of having to get up, at least she didn’t have to go to work and she had no classes today. Veronica pushed herself out of her small bed and stumbled tiredly into her kitchen, she cursed under her breath when she realized she had no milk to make herself breakfast.

“I guess no cereal or oatmeal for me…” She breathed, sighing tiredly.

The tired woman went to sit on her couch and contemplate how her life ended up like this, when she was fresh out of high school she had so many ambitions she knew she would work hard to achieve, then she went to college…she moved into her apartment and was so excited to finally be out of Westerburg and be independent. Then she realized that independence wasn’t all that it cracked up to be, she had to pay for her own food, clothing, various bills, she was lucky her parents helped her pay her rent. If not for them she was certain she’d be in a dilapidated cardboard box out on the streets like a stray cat.

Sighing out loudly again, she’d been sighing a lot more these past couple of years, she turned to watch the reruns of an old, low budget crime show she’d probably seen a million times by now.

She suddenly felt the vibrations of her phone, nuzzled in her pajama pants pocket. She pulled it out and looked at the caller ID.

Odd I don’t recognize this number?’ She thought while trying to decide whether to answer it or not.

She shrugged her shoulders and answered the call, what’s the worst that could happen?

“Hello?” She mumbled, wincing at her own voice, she sounded impossibly tired.

“Hello? Uhm is this Veronica Sawyer?” The person on the other side questioned, sounding unsure of themselves.

“The one and only.” She tried to joke but she just sounded like a douche with the tone of her voice. ‘Yikes…’ She thought as she waited for the person to speak.

“Here, you speak to her!” The person, who sounded like a woman and weirdly familiar, hissed quietly to who Veronica assumed was another person.

“Sawyer, long time no see.” The person drawled sounding incredibly bored already.

Veronica squinted in thought, she recognized that voice…

“Heather?” She asked, raising her eyebrows, it couldn’t be could it?

“The one and only. Well not really?” Heather Duke, chuckled, someone in the background giggled girlishly.

“Holy shit! I never thought I’d hear from any of you guys after graduation!” Veronica smiled, leaning forward, suddenly very interested in the conversation.

“Likewise, but after everything that went down senior year we felt like it didn’t feel right to just cut all contact with a person we shared that type of experience with, specially not you. Not to mention I think Heather would’ve wanted us to stick together…” Duke spoke, her last sentence coming out quieter than the first.

Veronica never really let herself think about her. Chandler’s death left a permanent stain on her soul she didn’t think she could clean off, maybe that’s the reason why she’d gotten so cynical over the years. The childishness of her wild teenage years stripped from her upon the shattering of Chandler’s expensive glass table.

“Yeah, I think so to…” The brunette spoke quietly into the phone, even bringing Heather up in a conversation got her in a mood, she thought she’d gotten over it?

“We should catch up sometime, go out for coffee maybe?” Duke said, trying to bring more positive energy into her voice which was uncommon for the black haired woman.

“How about we all meet up at my place? It’s not much, but it’s pretty cozy. I also think I could use the company, I’ve honestly forgotten when I last had someone over?” She smiled hoping the woman on the other end would accept her offer, she’d finally have something else to look forward to besides her mediocre work check she got every Friday.

“That sounds great! We’ll see you Saturday!” The other person, who Veronica now recognized was Heather McNamara, shouted ecstatically some where in the background.

“Welp it’s settled.” Duke snorted, Veronica could hear the fondness in her voice, she was glad those two at least stayed together after all these years.

“Yep, it’s settled, see you Saturday Heather…and thanks for calling. I think I really needed this.” Veronica breathed quietly, seeming unfamiliar with slightly pouring her heart out to someone.

“God Ronnie get a therapist! But seriously though you’re welcome, we needed this to.” Duke mumbled into the phone an indignant ‘Heather!’ Sounding from Mac.

And with that the call went silent, for a moment Veronica simply stared at the phone number, did that really just happen? After a couple of more moments she made the number a new contact in her already small list, she typed in Heather’s name and put a green heart emoji next to it.

After that task was done she smiled looking at the new contact, she then stood up to go get dressed. She originally wasn’t planning on going and getting that milk, but now she felt up to it.

‘Wait…Heather and Heather don’t have my address?’
