(Follow up to Killing Loneliness, You should read that before this if you haven't.)
*Upgraded to Explicit for one scene in the Epilogue. Which is easily skippable if that's not your jam and has no effect on the rest of the story.
Charles starts to notice a change in his best friend. He seems lighter and happier. He even seems to be okay with Charles and Crystal being together now. These are all great things, but Edwin has always been stuck in his ways and it has Charles wondering just what has happened to change things now.
But Edwin won't tell him, and it's got him worried. Not to mention there's some cat hanging about the office now that seems to be Edwin's new best friend, whenever Charles goes out with Crystal. The brawn doesn't trust anything about with the mangy little furball. Things really come to a head when Charles is proven right and the cat turns out to be the one person that he doesn't want within five feet of Edwin, and after their past history he can't understand why Edwin doesn't feel the same. What's worse is Edwin is DEFENDING the Cat King!

Post Season One - Edwin watching how comfortable Crystal and Charles are in each other spaces leads him to think about his own inability to relax. Longing to try and learn how to do so, he takes the opritnuity to go and learn from the one person he thinks could actually teach him how to be comfortable in his own skin. A trip through the mirror back to Port Townsend to visit The Cat King. Maybe they'll both also get the extra added bonus of learning how not to be lonely in the process.

“What in the world do you think you're doing?” Edwin asks, hands on his hips in the way Crystal says makes him look like a ‘cunty British Karen.’
This startles the man into dropping the shard of glass onto the pavement with a clink. “Fuck! Can't a guy trash his fucking ex's car ‘n peace?”
Edwin, for some reason, is startled by the man's appearance. The first thing he sees are black-lined eyes the color of honey, the golden hue almost glowing in the streetlight. Edwin’s love of mysteries, unfortunately for him, is only rivaled by his love of pretty boys. And while his plan to confront the vulgar vandal was not exactly fool-proof from the start, Edwin realizes he has severely miscalculated how the rest of this interaction would go, because the vandal is fucking gorgeous.

Edwin is a grad student who is sick of his friends trying to help him get over his crush on Charles by setting him up on dates. Thomas is hellbent on destroying his cheating ex's car right outside Edwin's window. And Edwin is having none of it...until he learns that Thomas' ex is actually Simon, his first-boyfriend-turned-bully.
Edwin needs a fake boyfriend. Thomas needs an alibi. What could possibly go wrong?

Charles is bored.
It’s the all consuming boredom that makes his skin itch in a way that nothing can satiate it. He’s not able to focus on anything and god has he tried: the words of his book are swimming off of the page and escaping him as he tries to focus so he abandons that, the paperwork does the same thing, and even reorganising his back of tricks holds no joy so he leaves it half unpacked, trinkets and tools scattered across the floor.
He’s bored.Monty seems to not be having the same problem though, because this entire time he’s been sitting peacefully reading some book on astrology, curled up in the armchair next to Niko’s bed.
And unfortunately for him, Charles is going to change that.

Summary
Edwin and Charles go undercover to an Welsh manor house for a week-long couples retreat. They are there to investigate a black market magic auction. While they investigate, they are pretending to be a young married couple.
Edwin has accepted that Charles doesn't feel the same way about him. But pretending to be married stirs up feelings he thought he'd learned to live with.
And Charles? He's experiencing what it's like to be seen as a bisexual man for the first time. Maybe it suits him better than he thought it would?

Of all the descriptions the Cat King has given Edwin, a classic is not one of them. "I'm not quite sure what you mean."
"It's nothing bad to be, not in the slightest," the Cat King says, earnest. "You appreciate the way things are and the way they were, seeing the beauty in both sides. You probably got a bunch of first editions back home- Oscar Wilde, Allen Poe, all the best of the Lake Poets." He shifts forward on his knees to where Edwin sits, brings himself just an inch closer to the space between his legs. "Think Art Noveau, letters written by candlelight instead typed up in telegrams, dances in ballrooms instead of old clubs.”
The look in his eyes, the admiration, now Edwin sees where it’s familiar. The fascination, from that cursed first night- drawn out by Edwin doing nothing but being himself. “There’s just nothing like you anymore.”

In other words, the CatWin season two where the Cat King ditches an Endless-sentenced exile in PT to chase after a second chance, Edwin meets him again for the first time on his side of the sea, and what they find is more than any mere fascination. I miss my idiots way too much.
