    When Neil was fourteen, his father caught up to them in Seattle and he got separated from Mary. Unfortunately, neither of them escaped unscathed, but they did escape despite all the odds. They manage to reunite at one of their emergency rendezvous and take off running.

    That's where their luck ran out though because they only made it to California before Mary's injuries finally bested her. In the end, his mother couldn't go on but she made Neil promise to keep running because one of them had to make it. With no other choice, Neil burned her body, buried her ashes on the beach, and did what he had promised.

    Then, impossibly, things went from bad to worse — After a month of just sort of drifting in his grief, Neil found out he was pregnant.

    It's really quite simple. There are four couples, right? And they're spread out through three cities across the US. Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Chicago. In each couple, one of the partner is a Navy SEAL. The other half is a First Responder. But so is the Navy SEAL. We have four firefighters, three detectives, and Steve. Are you keeping track?     May realised a very long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother. So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.

    And, look, if in the process she also gains a brother-in-law… clearly the universe was just waiting for the opportunity to make that happen.

    Or, the one where May ensures Buck is enfolded properly into the Grant-Nash clan, which means Bobby (and by extension the firefam, because gossip) suddenly gets significantly more insight into the inner workings of the Buckley-Diaz family, and all roads lead to Buddie…
