Bruce’s head snapped back with a soft, surprised oomph. He took one step backward, regaining his balance on one overly-smooth loafer as blood began to gush down his face.
Dick stared at him, unable to speak. Unable to look away as Bruce put a hand to his cheek, probing at the bloody gash like he’d never been hit in the face before. The hit he hadn’t seen coming.

“No,” Dick breathed. The word escaped like it had been punched from his gut. His head tilted to the side, slow and trembling, like his neck couldn’t hold the weight of what he was seeing.
“No…”
It came again, softer. Smaller. Like maybe if he whispered it, the universe would agree.
But it didn’t.
“No. No…” His voice cracked on the second one. Shook. His chest hitched as he took a shaky step forward. “No. No—no—”
A scrapped chapter on what could’ve happened if Bruce had called and told Dick Jason died.
