These crazy kids elope! And get to tell Shane's parents with a surprise gift.
You’re expected here in Ottawa and let yourselves into the house when you arrive, meeting the Hollanders in the living room, a volleyball game put on mute. “Hi boys!” Yuna coos, coming in for her usual greetings. She hugs you tightly and you love the wisp of her perfume. You haven’t told her why, and Shane keeps buying it for her every birthday, as is their tradition. She looks at the large gift bag in your hand. “Honey, it’s your birthday…”
You shrug. “Sure, but it’s your anniversary!” You’ve had enough birthdays and holidays with the Hollanders that they know you prefer time with them or sentimental gifts like candid photos of you and Shane together. They are much the same, preferring a day together with your small, close family over anything material. You move just past them to the coffee table and set the bag down, opening the top and inviting them both to reach in. Shane stands beside you, biting back a grin.

Shane’s told them bits about me, priming them to meet me and finally pulling back the curtain on everything he’d been hiding. Maybe not everything-everything, at least I hope not, but enough. They know about my mother from the foundation. They know about my father because it was public. I know and trust they’re both smart people and can guess how all that must have affected me, maybe explaining some of Rozanov, the only version of me they seemed to be familiar with, even if they don’t understand him that way yet. They know me and Shane are serious, that I love him fiercely and make him happy. They know enough.

Ilya walked into the bedroom, stuttering to a stop in the doorway as he saw the rucked up bedding. He forced himself to move again, intent on making a beeline to the shower. Instead his eyes snagged on the neatly folded pile of clothes on the leather chair in the corner of the room. A brown jacket, a white tee-shirt, a pair of black jeans, even a pair of crew socks, stacked neatly, waiting.
As if he were being reeled in, Ilya approached the chair and watched from outside his own mind as he ran a finger over the clothes, as if testing their reality. He pulled the jacket from the bottom of the pile, lifting it to his nose and inhaling slowly as he crouched low. He squeezed his eyes shut again, swallowed past the lump in his throat, and rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand.
