Summary
Nothing about the war had left him in a good state mentally and he knew that the case was the same with most if not all of the citizens in Natlan. War left its marks on everyone, made a victim of any whom it touched and Aether was no exception. He would never forget the horrors he’d seen, all the people and Saurian’s he had seen die and all the destruction he failed to prevent.
He just needed to rest.
And so began his journey home (to Xiao).

To Jean’s credit, he usually does race when they’re held in Liyue. When Venti haggles him enough, usually in combination with Rosaria and Kaeya whining too, drunk on Diluc’s expensive wine, he’ll often race in Mondstadt, swapping his car for a motorbike to twist through the intricate narrow streets that give the city its charm.
When Xiao wins (because he always does, in Mondstadt), Venti throws themselves on him at the finishing line, giggling as they pepper kisses across his cheeks. They call him handsome, and smart, and laugh when Xiao gets flustered - he always gets flustered when Venti compliments him.
But Venti isn’t here tonight. So he won’t race.

“Kazuha stroked the yaksha’s face with his thumb once more, before leaning forward.
He stopped.
He couldn’t do it.
His face flushed red and he quickly dropped his hand from Xiao’s face, stepping away from him.
“I- I’ll see you tomorrow, then,” he managed to get out, before walking away.
This happens every single time, he thought. Every time he saw Xiao, he told himself that this time, he would finally confess his feelings, he’d finally kiss him, but something stopped him every single time. Perhaps it was the fact that Xiao was never that affectionate, or showed no signs of reciprocating his feelings. Kazuha would rather silently pine for the yaksha than be rejected, and possibly never see him again. “

“For god's sake, Xiao, leave her alone!”
Xiao stared at his dad in shock. He almost never raised his voice at either of them, so it was always a surprise when he did. Xiao huffed and stared out the window, but he was screaming at himself in his head to stop being stupid, just say sorry, it’s not a big deal, just explain you’re having a bad sensory day and it’s messing up everything, but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything.
It wasn’t his fault he was having a bad day. He hates it when his routine gets disturbed or changed, he can’t deal with it the way other people can. When his routine changes suddenly, he can get mood swings, and when his mood swings are bad enough, he tends to snap at people. He doesn’t mean to. He just can’t help it.
The rest of the drive home was silent.
