Reinhard couldn’t help but recall a conversation he had with Subaru long ago, when Reinhard still felt moored in his own mind, and Subaru’s presence didn’t affect him beyond the joy of seeing a treasured friend. He had admitted to him wholeheartedly of the perceived dangers of having someone be that important to you. The impracticality of it all coupled with the self-centered demands it would bring about, voluntary or not.
And now look at him. Was he always doomed to fail in the most wonderful way possible?

Before he's even thinking too hard about it, his legs move on autopilot. They lead him towards a very familiar white and pale purple uniform and without even realizing it, he's already sat down and arms have already snaked around his waist.
There's a sudden silence inside the lounge. Not uncommon- But very abrupt.
"What?" He echoes with palpable confusion.
Julius looks away with a faint tint of pink on his cheeks as Ferris howls with laughter that sends them careening into the floor.
Coincidences turn into habits, unfortunately.

"Sure, would be better if Julius didn't show, but beggars can't be choosers." Subaru includes.
Reinhard's smile slowly grows wider with each of their input- A warm feeling spreading through his chest like an ice cube being dunked into a vat of warm water, slowly thawing, slowly melting. But headaches don't leave with simple feelings of happiness, so it intrudes and makes his smile waver for a moment. He hides it by taking a sip of water.
His headache rings in his head, his vision clouds for a moment before something shifts. Something feels terribly, terribly wrong.
Subaru only sees a glimpse, a glimpse of Reinhard's eyes widening just a fraction before he rises and opens his mouth to shout something-

They arch into the air and fall back until the bottom feathers drag along the ground. They’re breathtaking, beautiful in a way that makes his skin crawl. Pure white that gleams oddly under the light, the only exception being the muddy feathers strewn carelessly across the dirt.
Reinhard hasn’t seen Subaru since he walked him back to the manor. He thinks, head blank, that maybe he should’ve.
